Default filing stars

I'm going to DXR (Danbury) from ROC (Rochester) on Saturday. There is a STAR
for Danbury, NOBBI THREE, that has a transition starting at Rockdale. Here's
the question:

Should I file the STAR, even though it is a little out of the way, or should
I file a more direct route. If I file something more direct, am I likely to
get the STAR?

Brad

I would file a more direct route without the STAR in the hopes that you
might get it. If ATC gives you the STAR in your clearance, note it for
future reference.

I fly into Boston Logan from SYR about once every two months and I never
file the STAR. So far, I have never received it by name in my initial
clearance, but once I received it as a revised clearance while en route.

I've had a STAR (CVG) assigned even when I didn't file it, so at least
be prepared to see it in your clearance. I think they provide some
structure to a NORDO approach in busy airspace. In the case where it
happened to me, I received "direct" just before getting to the entry
point on the STAR (was going to a satellite airport, LUK).

Don't spend too many ergs worrying about what to file. It's the clearance you
get that counts, not the one you file.

Whether or not you're cleared for the STAR depends on the habits of the
particular approach control. Someone with local knowledge might be able to say
what clearance you're likely to get, but that still has little to do with what
you file.

File what you want to fly. Fly what you're cleared for.

When I flew from ROC to BAF last year, I filed without the STAR, and got
the route I filed. I had both routes in my GPS and in CoPilot, though.

I fly from ROC to CYOW every month, just about, and neither FSS nor DUATS
will allow me to put CYRIL or the CYRIL.CYRIL1 arrival in my flight plan,
but every time, as soon as I check in with Wheeler Sack approach they
ammend my clearance to tell me to fly to CYRIL and do the CYRIL ONE
arrival. So that's what I have in my GPS and CoPilot, in spite of filing
and cleared direct from ART.

A good landing is one you walk away from. A *great* landing is one after
which you can use the plane another time.

Regardless of what you file, if they want you on the STAR they'll put
you on it in the clearance. (Unless, of course, you file NO STAR.)

I am based at White Plains, and have never filed nor been assigned the
NOBBI 3 STAR. That said, if you look at the STAR you'll see the
"THENCE..." section takes you to RYMES and then HAARP...

Filing to HPN I am almost ALWAYS assigned a route that takes me to
VALRE or HAARP (via IGN V157) BREZY (via SAX V39) or RYMES (via BDR
BDR288 radial). You can probably expect the same...

I would file as direct a route as you are comfortable with. If you
want, file something that ends with IGN V157 HAARP. Maybe something
like

ROC V34 HNK V167 IGN V157 HAARP

Seems like a pretty straight route. AOPA's flight planner recommended
ROC V34 HNK V167 HELON, so this is just taking it to the next step.

I can't say for sure whether you'll get it, because I think the choice
of IGN V157 HAARP vs. SAX V39 BREZY depends on traffic and wind and
sequencing and all...

I usually just file whatever AOPA or Flightplan.com say, and they give
me what they want...
