Bye Looks To Lithium-Sulfur For Electric Aircraft Power
Kate O'Connor August 8, 20191

Bye Aerospace and OXIS Energy have announced a collaboration to
develop and produce a Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) “advanced battery cell for
the high-voltage battery pack system to be considered for Bye’s future
electric aircraft.” According to OXIS Energy CEO Huw Hampson-Jones,
OXIS’ Li-S cells and battery systems are “over 50 percent lighter than
the current Li-ion cell and battery systems” and are capable of
achieving the energy density needed for Bye’s aircraft.

“A key measure of OXIS’ suitability is to be able to consistently
produce cells in excess of 400 Wh/kg [watt-hours per kilogram], which
are already undergoing evaluation,” said Huw Hampson-Jones. “OXIS
expects to achieve 500 Wh/kg by early 2020.”

Bye Aerospace CEO George Bye says that the Li-S project is separate
from current “agreements and intentions” related to the company’s
eFlyer 2 electric trainer. Instead, it is aimed at the four-place
eFlyer 4 and unnamed “future air taxi aircraft designs.” Work on the
project is scheduled to begin this September with the goal of moving
toward production of commercial cells and battery systems over the
following 18 months.

OXIS ENERGY GOES INTO MASS PRODUCTION OF LITHIUM SULFUR CELLS
By Oxis EnergyJune 6, 2019Press Releases

OXIS Energy is to establish the first ever manufacturing plant for the
production of electrolyte and cathode active material specifically for
the mass production of lithium sulfur cells. The plant will be built
at the Kenfig Industrial Estate Port Talbot in Wales. OXIS has signed
a 15 year lease with United UK Real Estate Investment Industrial
Holdings Limited to develop the plant and it’s expected that several
hundred jobs will be created within the next ten years. The
electrolyte and cathode active material, which is currently at
Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL) 8 will be produced for worldwide
export.

The plant will supply the OXIS Energy Brazil Holding’s manufacturing
plant, which has been jointly set up between the State Government of
Minas Gerais and OXIS Energy UK. OXIS will retain its Research and
Development activity in the UK. However, it will collaborate with
Codemig, a wholly owned company controlled by the State of Minas
Gerais to jointly exploit lithium rock deposit for the production of
world class lithium metal, which is used by OXIS for its Li-S cells.
OXIS is currently working on the design of the Brazilian Plant with
NORDIKA Pharmaceutical of Brazil. It is also collaborating with other
European companies, such as Siemens AG who have expertise in digital
manufacturing and cyber security.

The objective is to produce the active material in Port Talbot in
order to supply the cell capacity production in millions of units from
2020 until 2030.

Huw Hampson-Jones, CEO OXIS Energy said, “With support from both the
State Government of Minas Gerais and the Welsh Government, including
the investment made by the Development Bank of Wales, OXIS is working
towards the commercialization of mass production of lithium sulfur
cells for electric batteries in order to address our target markets -
aviation, marine and buses and trucks (Heavy Electric Vehicles).”
The Western seaboard of the ports in Wales, Cardiff, Newport, Port
Talbot and Swansea are ideally placed and accessible for exports to
Brazil. OXIS will decide on the port of embarkation of the goods in
the next 18-24-months.

Huw Hampson-Jones added, "We believe this will create even more jobs
in Wales. In many cases we shall be creating a highly skilled
workforce, and indeed, Wales is the only region in the UK, where it is
seeking to promote bilingualism, which is the basis for multilingual
skills, an essential requirement for OXIS in its expansion plans for
its long-term growth in the export of goods.”

Editor's notes
OXIS Energy Ltd is involved in the design, development and now the
move towards commercial production of lithium sufur cells for battery
systems. With over 40 patent families, OXIS has been granted 182
patents with 99 pending. OXIS has demonstrable empirical data
justifying its claim on the inherent safety of its battery technology.

OXIS Energy to Develop Proof-of-Concept Advanced, Lightweight Lithium
Sulfur Cells for BYE AEROSPACE

OXIS Energy to Develop Proof-of-Concept Advanced, Lightweight Lithium
Sulfur Cells for BYE AEROSPACE

Companies Launch Phase 1 of Collaboration Program

The OXIS Energy Lithium-Sulfur battery cell technology offers
significant benefits to aviation and as a result, it is collaborating
with Bye Aerospace of Denver, Colorado to produce a common Li-S
advanced battery cell for the high voltage battery pack system to be
considered for Bye’s future electric aircraft. These cells will
achieve the higher energy density required for such aircraft. The
project will commence in September 2019.

Huw Hampson-Jones, CEO OXIS Energy, said, “Aviation is one of OXIS’
target markets, and in the first instance, Regional Rapid Air Taxi
Transportation. A key measure of OXIS’ suitability is to be able to
consistently produce cells in excess of 400 Wh/kg, which are already
undergoing evaluation. OXIS expects to achieve 500 Wh/kg by early
2020. Our Li-S cells and battery systems are ideally suited for
aviation. They are over 50% lighter than the current Li-ion cell and
battery systems, with the winning formula of a high energy cell at the
power required. The use of the same cell format across batteries will
also help our customers to minimise cost and improve serviceability.”

George Bye, CEO of Bye Aerospace, said “New Li-S battery cells from
Oxis have the potential to greatly enhance the quality, cost and
performance of eFlyer 4 and our other future aircraft projects. Our
collaboration with OXIS is separate from the current eFlyer 2
agreements and intentions we have with confirmed and our future supply
chain partners. Bye Aerospace is working with Oxis on the Li-S battery
cell characteristics to significantly improve our eFlyer 4 and future
air taxi aircraft designs’ performance. The average age of the global
market for Turboprop fleet is 28 years. OXIS has the potential to
provide a Li-S battery cell that is truly a game-changer.”

In ground tests in Europe, OXIS has already shown that Li-S has
demonstrated a significant improvement in simulated flight duration
compared with Lithium NMC; it will now undertake a further series of
tests which will provide a robust indication of the OXIS Li-S
performance.

Over the next 18 months, the aim is to move towards the production of
commercial cells and battery systems in order to meet the volume
roll-out criteria set by Bye Aerospace.

Editor’s Notes
OXIS Energy Ltd is involved in the design, development and now the
move towards commercial production of lithium sulfur cells for battery
systems. OXIS manufactures and produces all aspects and components in
the making of the Li-S cell. With over 44 patent families, OXIS has
been granted 183 patents with 101 pending.

Bye Aerospace is developing FAR 23-certified general aviation
aircraft, starting with the eFlyer 2, for the flight training role.
The eFlyer family of aircraft, featuring exemplary engineering,
research, and electric aircraft solutions producing no CO2, are
designed to answer compelling market needs. The company, a finalist in
the manufacturing category for ColoradoBiz magazine’s Top Company of
the Year 2019, was founded by George E. Bye, who is also Chairman and
CEO.
