M&H announces NEW WINGLETS for the Ventus2 and Discus. The winglets
are designed by Prof. Mark Maughmer of Penn State University and the
Ventus2 winglets are expected to be available late spring 2012. Discus
winglets expected availability will be announced here later.

Monty, Heinz,

Please put me on your list of interested parties. My competition
season has a big gap in July - perfect for a retrofit operation! ;-).
Any idea of the retrofit cost?

Regards,

Frank

Discus 1 or 2?

Have you spoken to the factory about getting approval for this mod in
Europe?
Those of us in EASA land are pretty much constrained to using the factory
winglets

I'm curious - since the image on the link appears to have an outward cant,
does this increase the measured span beyond 15 meters, or is more cut off
the tip during initial installation to account for this?

Or, put differently, while sporting these winglets, can the glider still be
fit between two posts spaced 15 meters apart? Or does anyone care about
that any more?

Dan,

At the Worlds their is a scrutneer. He really does go over every
glider before the contest starts. Every glider is scheduled for a 15
minute inspection. Even max. pilot weight, which the placard shows, is
enforced. Here at our USA contests it not looked at that close, YET.

Regards, Tom Kelley.

Re canted winglets increasing span: I recall a reported conversation
between a well-known competition pilot (WKCP) and purveyor of
modifications etc., and a competition official (CO), re some new wing
tips.

CO: It exceeds 15m span now.

WKCP: Not when it’s flying – the added dihedral from the wings flexing
reduces it to 15m.

CO: When you show me by flying between two posts 15m apart without
hitting them, I will let you compete with those.

End of conversation.

US rules allow you to exceed nominal by 2.5 centimeters in the
unloaded position.

At the Worlds each glider recieves scrutineering. 15 minutes is
scheduled for each one. Long days for the scrutineer for sure, but he
checks EVERYTHING, even including max. allowable cockpit pilot
weight..............

USA not so except weights, but that could always change. Good story
Chris. Ya, another story was the open glider that showed up to be
scrutineered. He came in fully watered, wing tips almost dragging the
ground. He wanted to be checked for span first, then be weighted
AFTER he dumped down to legal takeoff weight. That didn't go very far
either.

Regards, Tom.

Note that the reference wing in the graphic is horizontal. Go look at
how much dihedral the tip panel has and you will see that the cant is
nowhere near as much as it looks in the graphic.
These guys have been doin' this for awhile and have been to a few of
these here rodeos.

I can personally verify that Harold Drew, scrutineering at the '65
UK Worlds measured the Standard Class gliders by opening two
hangar doors to marginally over an accurate 15,000mm and
required each glider to be manoeuvred through with wings level.
He made the same reply ('you can fly through the gap of you
prefer') when offered the same excuse.

The Finnish Vasama was significantly over span; the Team
Manager offered the explanation that the glider was so new the
wooden spars were still growing. Firm action with a plane to the
wingtip fairings made it legal, if a little less pretty.
