Pipistrel Unveils 801 eVTOL
Paul BertorelliJune 11, 20190

Slovenia-based Pipistrel Vertical Solutions threw its hat into the
eVTOL ring Tuesday by revealing a multi-fan electric airplane with
vertical takeoff and landing capability. At Uber’s Elevate Summit in
Washington, D.C., Pipistrel unveiled the so-called 801 as a
five-occupant winged aircraft capable of a 60-mile range at 175 MPH or
more.

The 801 has four shrouded fans mounted in the bottom of two low-aspect
ratio wings, with a single propulsive unit for forward thrust. (The 8
refers to the fans, the 1 the horizontal propulsor and 0 for no tilt
rotors.) The fly-by-wire control system will be provided by Honeywell
and at his Elevate presentation, Pipistrel’s Tine Tomazic said the
company wants the vehicle to be autonomous ready right out of the box.
The control system also integrates sense-and-avoid technology.

In this exclusive podcast
https://www.avweb.com/multimedia/pod...vtol-revealed/
recorded by AVweb at Pipistrel’s Slovenia headquarters, Tomazic offers
additional details. During our visit, Pipistrel said it has been
flying various size vehicles to prove the design, but the company
declined to provide any details. “Noise will make or break an eVTOL
system,” Tomazic said and to prove the 801’s low noise signature, he
played for the audience a recording made 100 feet from a test vehicle.
To our ear, it has the frequency of an Indy car, but with volume
dramatically subdued.

During our visit to Slovenia, Pipistrel said it pursued a winged
design rather than a multi-rotor because lifting surfaces reduce power
consumption and allow higher speeds and more range. After takeoff, the
rotors are enclosed in retractable doors to reduce drag. The company
says the 801 can land and take off vertically, but if necessary, it
can also land on a runway like a conventional aircraft and can manage
vertical flight with six of the eight fans. “It’s not only quiet. It’s
very fast,” Tomazic said. “You are in for a sporty ride,” he added.

Pipistrel is best known for its line of single-engine light aircraft,
including the Alpha Electro trainer, the only commercially available
electric aircraft for the trainer role. To cement its role in the
eVTOL market, the company recently rebranded itself as Pipistrel
Vertical Solutions. It has a factory in Ajdovšcina, Slovenia, and
immediately across the border in Gorizia, Italy. AVweb will have a
video on that factory in a future issue. Pipistrel is one of five
companies partnered with Uber Elevate to produce eVTOL designs. But
Uber is not providing investment capital for the project.

Pipistrel eVTOL News
23 FEB 2019
Honeywell and Pipistrel announced on Jan. 24 that they have signed a
memorandum of understanding to explore and develop solutions for
eVTOL. “This is the beginning of a long-term relationship to
collectively pursue the future of urban air mobility [UAM],” said Ivo
Boscarol, founder and president of Pipistrel. “Honeywell’s expertise
in integrated avionics and flight control systems, systems
integration, certification, and manufacturing, combined with our
capabilities in designing and developing advanced light aircraft,
makes us the perfect pairing to advance the urban air mobility market.
Pipistrel was chosen to be one of Uber’s vehicle development partners
for its urban mobility solution, and our VTOL air vehicle features
nextgeneration propulsion technology for achieving embedded lift. We
have the concept that unlocks a cost-attractive electric VTOL
opportunity by addressing efficiency and noise hurdles in vehicle
lift, hover and cruise stages of flight.” The propulsion approach for
Pipistrel’s five-seat Uber design has not been previously revealed,
but images of what Pipistrel dismissed as an older configuration were
leaked from China in January; they show a concept designated X801 with
two rows of four embedded lift fans.

Pipistrel reveals new eVTOL concept
24 MAY 2018
Uber Elevate Press Release, May 9, 2018 As part of Uber’s second
annual Elevate Summit, aircraft designer and Uber Elevate partner,
Pipistrel, has revealed its newest eVTOL concept and design. The new
aircraft utilizes dedicated propulsion systems for both cruising and
vertical lift and embraces an aircraft family approach of eVTOL able
to carry from two to six passengers. As part of its broader Elevate
aviation initiative, Uber plans to operate a network of small,
electric, aircraft in numerous cities worldwide to enable four-person
ridesharing flights in densely populated urban markets. These electric
vertical takeoff and landing vehicles (eVTOLs) differ from helicopters
in that they are orders of magnitude quieter, safer, more affordable,
and more environmentally friendly. The new Pipistrel eVTOL concept,
developed as a partner of Uber Elevate, will be able to go longer
distances at higher speeds than previous models. Utilizing a new
integrated vertical lift system, the vehicle is designed for
scalability, and will lower operating costs while offering an upgraded
rider experience. Pipistrel has been a leader in aircraft design and
production. In 2011, they won the NASA Green Flight Challenge, which
was the largest aviation prize in history at $1.5 million. Their
electric G4 concept was able to fly up to four passengers 100 miles at
an average speed of 108 mph. Located in Slovenia, Pipistrel currently
produces 13 different models of two-seat aircraft, including the Alpha
Electro and the Taurus Electro, which feature all-electric propulsion.
They’ve also recently developed the Panthera aircraft, a
high-performance three-seat general aviation aircraft with modular
propulsion, and electric, hybrid and fuel-powered engine. “Pipistrel
is not trying to reinvent the helicopter by giving the vehicle many
rotors, but is rather embracing dedicated propulsion solutions for
cruise and vertical lift with built-in scaling capability for a family
of vehicles with two to six seats,” said Ivo Boscarol, Pipistrel’s
founder and general manager. “Pairing an innovative integrated
vertical lift system, which is quiet and efficient, with highly
aerodynamic wings results in a new class of eVTOL that maximizes
high-speed cruise performance and dramatically lowers cost of
operation for a clear advantage to Uber Elevate passengers.”
“Pipistrel has been one of the pioneers in electric aircraft
development, initiating the age of electric flight,” said Mark Moore,
Uber’s director of engineering, elevate vehicle systems. “As an Uber
Elevate partner, their eVTOL concept is pushing towards the next
generation of distributed electric propulsion. We’re thrilled to
continue …

The Electric VTOL Industry Shifts Gears
24 APR 2019
The Electric VTOL Industry Shifts Gears By Kenneth I. Swartz
Vertiflite May/June 2019 A VFS panel and other discussions at
Heli-Expo provided an opportunity for the commercial helicopter
operating community to ask some tough questions about eVTOL
technology. For the second year in a row, the Vertical Flight Society
organized a panel discussion at Heli-Expo to brief the civil
helicopter industry and operators on electric- and
hybrid-electric-powered vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft
opportunities and challenges. When the eVTOL industry was born a few
years ago, it was imaginative aircraft concepts developed by start-up
aircraft makers that first captured the attention of the public and
popular press outlets. In early 2019, the spotlight shifted from eVTOL
start-ups to major aerospace manufacturers and suppliers now heavily
investing in eVTOL/Urban Air Mobility (UAM) technology to meet future
market needs, including Airbus, Bell, Boeing, Honeywell, Safran,
Sikorsky and Thales. All these companies have the talent and resources
required to design, build, flight test, certify and support fleets of
safe and reliable eVTOL aircraft for UAM missions. This strong
commitment to eVTOL development was on display at Heli-Expo where the
Bell Nexus mock-up was swarmed by rotorcraft operators, Safran and
Honeywell prominently displayed their respective hybrid-electric power
systems alongside conventional turboshaft engines, and SureFly became
the first company to display an actual flying eVTOL aircraft at the
annual tradeshow. The Electric VTOL Revolution The Vertical Flight
Society’s second annual panel on “The Electric VTOL Revolution” at
Heli-Expo featured strong representation from the helicopter industry,
with Elan Head of Vertical magazine moderating the discussion.
Vertical also provided promotional and sponsorship support. This
year’s panel speakers were Mike Hirschberg, Executive Director of the
VFS; Scott Drennan, VP Innovation at Bell; Zach Lovering, VP of Urban
Air Mobility Systems at Airbus; Thierry Grison, VP Business
Development, Hybrid New Market at Safran; Danny Sitnam, President and
CEO of Helijet International; Rex Alexander, President of Five-Alpha
LLC; and Michael Dyment, managing partner of NEXA Capital Partners.
VFS livestreamed the panel and the entire nearly two-hour discussion
(including presentations) which can be found via Society’s Video
Library webpage:
www.vtol.org/videos. VFS Leadership Reflecting on the
Vertical Flight Society’s six years of work nurturing electric VTOL
development, Executive Director Mike Hirschberg opened the discussion
by saying that the eVTOL revolution “is going to really happen. It’s
not ‘if’ but ‘when.’ There is lots of technical rigor behind what is
going on; it’s …
