Default Tom Knauff's 14 Jan 12 Safety Webinar

Enjoyed the comfort and convenience of my home office while
"attending" Tom's first of three weekly Saturday morning Glider Safety
Seminars. It was a "webinar - short for Web-based Seminar, a
presentation, lecture, workshop or seminar that is transmitted over
the Web" according to Wikipedia.

Great way for pilots in the Northern Hemisphere to prepare for the
coming "Silly Season" and for pilots everywhere to hear Tom present.

10 things discussed today:
1. How risky is our sport?
2. Taking off, in flight, mid-airs, landing -- where is the greatest
danger?
3. Why does a glider have: ailerons, an elevator, a rudder?
4. Why to use a written checklist -- every time!
5. CRM (Crew Resource Management) at the gliderport and why Crew
means everyone.
6. Why the very beginning of a flight is the time to
focus...focus...focus.
7. How to position the stick to prevent a PIO on take-off - in any
glider.
8. Simple tips to fly a safe and smooth tow - for you and the
towpilot.
9. The best angle of bank to use after a rope break above 200 feet
AGL.
10. The signs of a stall in the order they occur.

I, too, enjoyed Tom's webinar yesterday - it was a good refresher
course on an important subject. Tom has a great depth of knowledge on
safety, and his delivery made a dry subject entertaining. Although
I've read and heard a lot regarding safety over the years, I came away
with some new information from yesterday's webinar. I highly recommend
Tom's upcoming follow-on safety webinars to pilots of all experience
levels.

-John
