On any given day in the Coastal Bend, nearly 20 varieties of airplanes
or helicopters are flying above.

They run the gamut of military and civilian aircraft: military
training planes and jets from Naval Air Station Corpus Christi and
Naval Air Station Kingsville, MH-53 mine-warfare helicopters, Coast
Guard helicopters and planes, U.S. Customs planes, Army helicopters
from the Corpus Christi Army Depot, commercial airliners, private
planes, crop-dusters and vintage aircraft.

Wednesday is the 100th anniversary of human flight, and in that
century the Coastal Bend has established itself as a hotbed of
military aviation.

In many ways, the sky in Corpus Christi is just as busy as the land
and sea. But flight here extends well beyond the air, stretching into
the economy, the military and the social fabric.
