It's not STC'ed for a 235, because of the tip tanks.

Damn.

Oh well -- I'll take those extra 34 gallons of gas over a landing light, any
day!

So talk to your mechanic about a field approval. It worked for me.

I wonder when My Mechanic is gonna pipe up on this thread

Jay,
I thought you don't fly at night. Anything change?

You can't. These particular ones are mounted in the fiberglass wingtips.
The wingtips on 235s are fuel tanks.

I haven't had any problems with leaks around the lights. I get much more
water
in around the gas tanks and in the lap joint in wing skins than I do

around the
lights. I've only replaced one bulb in the wings in 700+ hours since
installing them. I have the skytec version of the pulse light on them,

which is
turned on for every flight. In the same amount of time, I've gone through

a
half dozen nose light lamps, and that one is only on during approach at

night.

Wow -- now that is a ringing endorsement.

Hell, at the cost of bulbs, you'll pay back a goodly portion of the
installation costs in a matter of years.

Thanks, Ray.

Not really. I don't fly at night as a common practice, but we sure seem to
make a lot of dusk arrivals.

And, occasionally, we get stuck in a situation where we simply must fly at
night.

I also like the idea of being able to leave the Boom Beam on continuously,
day or night, simply for recognition.

How 'bout you? How's the flying in the "Land 'o TFRs"?

Actually Jay, there are no TFR's anywhere near here. As far as I can tell,
the nearest restrictions are in the DC area, ~300nm away. By comparison,
the closest TFR to IOW is in western Indiana, ~210 miles away.

Anyway, after an agonizing hiatus from flying since October, this past month
I've been fairly active - starting with the skydiving experience in Monterey
four weeks ago (www.avivhod.com/gallery/Skydiving), then gettting checked
out in one of East Coast Aero Club's (www.ecas.com) warriors two weeks ago
at KBED. I then flew with some friends two days after getting checked out -
a short jaunt around the patch. I thought I'd wait longer than that, but
the sky beckoned... :-)

Then last Sunday the wife and I were invited to fly to Martha's Vineyard
with Jeremy Lew, who I met through r.a.p. It was a great flight - did some
sight seeing around the island to allow Jeremy to fly off the last of the 50
hours PIC to qualify for his instrument ticket, then landed and had a great
brunch at the airport cafe.

Hanscom was refreshingly quiet for the return trip, in contrast to the
handful of other times I've landed there, when the pattern was just bananas.
IMHO it's quite a bit more complicated to operate there than even Manassas
(KHEF), where I got my ticket, mostly because Hanscom doesn't have parallel
runways. I can vouch for the accuracy of Hanscom's label as "the beehive".
But it's 15 minutes away from my house, so it's by far the most convienient
option.

So, I'm back in the saddle again. But I have a feeling that I just won't be
able to fly nearly as often as I got to in Iowa, even though I'm no longer a
student. Those $35/hour Greencastle 150's were just addictive...

On the upside, however, I feel much more confident about the airplanes I fly
over here. Opening the cowl of the ECAC warriors is a pleasure. Everything
is spic and span - clean, tight, and shiny. I can actually flight plan
using book numbers. The interiors are light years ahead of the Greencastle
planes. Of course, the price difference reflects all of this. My
conclusion is that it's not better or worse, just different.

Blue Skies,
-Aviv

Knots2u has a HID wingtip kit for $500. Since you enjoy the extra 34
gallons so much (I would on my Arrow too if I had the option), why not
just accept the additional cost and get exactly what you want, a cowl
mount? The Boom Beam also offers 3 choices of beam spread.
