Default wax stain

We did some communal glider waxing over the week end using Mothers 3 step method. The room temperature was 15-20C maybe a bit on the humid side, we found that wherever we applied a thicker dab of wax a stain remained after the wax off process. Was this a reaction between the wax and gelcoat? Old wax?
