Two changes to the list of IGC-approval documents for GNSS flight
recorders are announced. These took effect from 1 January 2004:


1. Filser LX20 GNSS recorder - update to the IGC-approval.

This update is Version 5 after the original Version 1 that was issued on
12 August 1996. Version 5 introduces two levels of IGC-approval with
effect from 1 April 2004.

1.1 The first batch of LX20 recorders (manufactured in 1996 and
1997)
that are without a security microswitch and without
public/private key (RSA-level) electronic security
will be eligible for use for
all IGC/FAI badge and distance diploma flights,
but not for world record flights.

1.2 Later LX20 recorders have both a security microswitch and
RSA-level electronic security, continue to be IGC-approved
for all flights including world records, as do
first-batch recorders that are modified to this standard


2.. Cambridge (Martinsville).

Withdrawal of the two IGC-approval documents for the Martinsville,
Virginia operation of Cambridge LLC. One document was for the legacy
(1996) Cambridge models 10, 20 and 25, and the other for the more recent
Cambridge model 302 series of recorder.

2.1 Cambridge LLC of Martinsville, VA has not replied to emails
from the IGC GFA Committee (GFAC) since 4 November 2003
and has not taken action on several requests from GFAC.
In a web article from the local Roanoke Times newspaper,
the associated company Cerxon is no longer in business.

2.2 The IGC-approvals for Cambridge Aero Instruments (CAI) Inc.,
of Horn Lake, Memphis, Mississipi are not affected and
the Horn Lake organisation is now the only one recognised
by IGC as producing GNSS flight recorders
under the Cambridge name.

Note: The information on the status of Cambridge LLC of Martinsville,
VA, and the associated company Cerxon is made in good faith and on the
basis of the best information available to GFAC, IGC and FAI at this
time. Any change to this information should be notified to the
undersigned immediately and, if appropriate, corrections to the above
announcement will be made.

Can you clarify what this means?. Please don't say that the 302s
manufactured while Cambridge operated from Martinsville are no longer
approved.

The CAI Inc. (Horn Lake) approval document covers all 302s currently in
the field, and future production of 302s by Horn Lake.

I confirm what Marc said above. A 302 is a 302 whether it was purchased
through Martinsville or Horn Lake. The same with the older models 10,
20 and 25. The build-standard of units originating from Martinsville or
Horn Lake was the same, as far as IGC is aware.

All previous IGC-approvals for Cambridge recorders continue under the
terms of the two IGC-approval documents now on the gliding/gnss web
pages under the Cambridge name. One document is for the 302 series, the
other for the earlier models 10, 20 and 25.

The difference for people who used to deal with Martinsville is that any
future servicing or updates will be through normal commercial
arrangement with Cambridge Aero Instruments Inc at Horn Lake, Memphis,
MI. The details given on their IGC-approval documents a

Note on manufacturer codes:

In November 2003, the IGC GFA Committee produced different manufacturer
codes for Martinsville to use, to differentiate their production from
that of Horn Lake. These codes were never used, as far as we know, and
there should be no recorders out there with the new codes. If there
are, would the owner(s) please email me and we will get the situation
sorted out.

These new codes for Martinsville were CLC and M (standing for Cambridge
LLC and Martinsville), compared to the traditional Cambridge codes of C
and CAM for use with IGC format files and *.CAI for the legacy recorder
binary files.
