You wonder if they couldn't recognize the extraordinary circumstances and keep the footprint to a minimum. Surely the President could override his handlers and insist on it, recognizing the risk, but also recognizing the political dividends. |

Well, on this case, they DID recognize the circumstances and didn't stop the airborne firefight efforts. |

Has anyone gone back and read the actual notams? I just reviewed the one for Cincinnati for today and it specifically calls out firefighting flights as permitted inside the 10 mile ring, they just need to be co-ordinate with the USSS. I don't see where this is a problem.

It should have been something Bush's people offered, particularly following the complaints after his visit four days after Katrina. And if you believe political web sites, here is a discussion about the photo ops that were set up after Katrina: http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/bu...ns_photos.html I hope things will less orchestrated in California, but the contrived news conference FEMA gave doesn't encourage me. |

It's all about politics and public perception. While California couldn't say the President couldn't come, if they wanted to undermine the president when he made the visit, they could easily focus in on the effect of any flight restrictions on addressing the disaster, and make it look like the President is hindering things rather than helping. |

All Presidential TFRs have standard language like that allowing law enforcement, emergency, and firefighting aircraft into the TFR. California had nothing to do with it. Garamendis is taking credit for doing nothing. Then why was all the aerial rescue work stopped within the TFR when he ingratiated himself to New Orleans, or was the wording something that changed after all the criticism? AFAIK the aerial rescue work did not all stop. What makes you think it did? -- Waddling Eagle World Famous Flight Instructor |
