Also, the brits have a fetish about appearances. BA pilots do their sim in
uniform, for instance.

Not only Spitfire pilots.
All of them.
Not only for identification but because all of those aircraft were
very cold.
Get onto a 12,000 feet load and feel the difference when they open
the hatch

The Gestapo bitches in France beat the **** out of my grandfather and
sentenced him to death at dawn because he didn't have his dogtags, after
the priest from whom he sought refuge turned him over to the Germans.

and told him his name, rank, serial number, the names of his
crewmembers, squadron, group, the whole works. Then they shipped him
off to Stalag 17B.
