Default RNZAF Skyhawk Sale Update

Still nothing final and official but FWIW:

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/latestnews...toryID=3524348

Skyhawk sale still on, says American company

19.09.2003 10.00 am

The American company negotiating to buy the air force's fleet of
mothballed Skyhawk attack jets says the deal is still going through.

The Arizona-based Advanced Training Systems International (ATSI) said
today it was still waiting final approval from the United States State
Department before the sale of the 17 Skyhawks could be finalised and
they could be shipped to America.

An aviation magazine reported this week the sale had fallen through
but ATSI chairman, former US Navy fighter pilot Larry "Hoss" Pearson,
told NZPA today that was wrong and the deal was still viable.
....
The sale of the air force's fleet of 17 Aermacchi jet trainers is also
thought to be nearing completion. They are likely to go to the
Malaysian Government."

So lets suppose that someone, oh say Al-Qaeda manages to highjack
a 747 inbound for Auckland. This is discovered when they are 30
minutes from touchdown or impact or whatever it is they are planning to
do.
What does the NZ DOD plan to do about it these days?

The plan is to sit down and calmly negotiate with the inbound terrorists is
a loving, trusting and supporting atmosphere where an open and free
exchange of feelings is encouraged.

If there isn't a supportive negotiator on the flight, the in flight
telephones are a cost effective alternative. In this way - a
mutually acceptable solution can be achieved without the need for expensive
or obsolescent weapon systems.

In Australia, our negotiators fly Hornets.

As has been said a number of times before, "God defend New Zealand" isn't
just the national anthem, it's the defence policy.

Same thing that they planned to do when there were 15-odd Skyhawks
in-country - pray they missed. It wasn't like it was practical to keep
enough birds on alert to cover the entire country 24-7-365 (it's about
the size of Japan). Of course providing point defense for things like
the APEC conference that was hosted in the 1990's is no longer an
option.

How well protected against such attacks are places like Cork or
Bangkok or Mexico City. Seriously, I'm curious.

Park the A4's all over the runway to stop the aircraft from
landing.....................

Perhaps they've found a way to mount A4's on tripods so they can just aim
the armaments at the target from the ground?

Forgot the obvious. They move to the south island and get the Mauris to form
a defensive Haka.

No? Well...um, this is kinda awkward. I guess you all are kinda' mad at
us...hey, you guys see 'The Lord of the Rings' movies? Those were good,
right? We made 'em right here. What say you don't attack and we'll see if
we can get you passes to the Return of the King shoot? Please?"

Not culturally significant...
