setting up a Garmin 296
Okay, I gave myself the early birthday present. I can't believe how sensitive the 296 is. I stroll down to the dock and it tells me that I am tracking 178 degrees at 1 knot; I turn around and walk back, and THE MAP FLIPS! and I am tracking 348 degrees (whatever). I even got it to show a bank on the panel display when I walked briskly along and tilted the GPS. Anyhow, my question: I set it to show Zulu time and magnetic compass readings. Then I wondered: is this the right thing to do? Is this the right thing to do? Are there any other basic settings I should set now that will improve my life to come? Thanks! all the best -- Dan Ford email: (put Cubdriver in subject line) Warbird's Forum www.warbirdforum.com Piper Cub Forum www.pipercubforum.com the blog www.danford.net |

I found it very non-intuitive to use. After flying behind it for about 100 hours I think I'll dump it. I'm most annoyed by the fact that it doesn't show airways on the map. The screen is also smaller than my SkyMap IIIC and the terrain on the 296 always seems to be wrong (its usually off by at least 1000 feet). I also don't like the fact that the only way to get a course line is to put it in marine mode. I like being able to fly to an airport simply by turning until the course line falls on the airport. The design of the screen is very odd to me too. They put most of the room to the side of the plane. They should have designed the screen to be taller and perhaps more narrow. I'm more concerned with what is ahead of me than what is to the side. I still have my SkyMapIIIc with the terrain database so I'll probably swap back to that. -Robert |

Two ways with a RAM mount...
one is to attach a ball mount to one of the upright tubes second is to use a suction cup mount attached to the side of the windscreen Jay Honeck wrote: Is this the right thing to do? huh. on my 196, its been intuitive after playing around with it. It also
shows a course line, so I can't see why the 296 wouldn't have it either. John |

All handheld are VFR only. The Garmin 296 does not have a higher learning
curve than any other. Karl "Hankal" wrote in message ... I just bought one this summer. I found it very non-intuitive to use. After flying behind it for about 100 hours I think I'll dump it. Where do you mount a GPS in a Cub? Sheez. I thought I was getting information, not giving it! The old one went on the back of the front seat, mounted on an upside-down picture frame, viz: www.pipercubforum.com/garmin.htm I haven't flown with the 296 yet. This afternoon. all the best -- Dan Ford email: (put Cubdriver in subject line) Warbird's Forum www.warbirdforum.com Piper Cub Forum www.pipercubforum.com the blog www.danford.net |

wrote: I haven't flown with the 296 yet. This afternoon. Okay, here's what I like about the 296: The "nearest" button calls up 15 airports, which is all I am likely to use. So despite those thousands of waypoints stored therein, the 296 has a more useful choice than my honed-down III+. The color screen is a hoot. The terrain-avoidance feature is amazing. It warned me of the radio antenna on Blue Job mountain that I use for navigation. It is more intuitive than the III+, using which I sometimes lost track of where I was and how to get back to the "track" screen. The 296 is a breeze to navigate (as it were). And, most of all, a guy from Garmin read my post and sent me email offering to help. What an outfit! I will certainly take advantage of this offer when I have all my questions in a row. *************************** What I don't like: The color washes out when there's a lot of sunshin going on (which, in an L-4 wannabe, is a lot of the time). It interferes with my radio! I am going to have to work this one out. ************************** I haven't decided where to mount it. I may build an extender to my kneeboard and put it there. It seems to work just fine with the antenna pointing near horizontal. Here I am again, giving information where I'd hope to garner some! all the best -- Dan Ford email: (put Cubdriver in subject line) Warbird's Forum www.warbirdforum.com Piper Cub Forum www.pipercubforum.com the blog www.danford.net |
