Default Red Bull Air Races..

Anyone ever been to the Red Bull air races? They look interesting.

There is one in San Francisco in October, but I have heard that the
non-US ones are the best because of more lax regulations (i.e. flying
under bridges, etc.) Anyone have any info?

Thanks... I was hoping to hear from someone who had been there though
(i.e. what's the inside story)

I looked on the net and it looks like a neat race followed by the Blue
Angels and the Fleet Week air show. We just happen to be on the left
coast that weekend for a race, so we are thinking of going. Any San
Francisco types have any good ideas of where to go? We are thinking of
renting a boat for the day and watching from the water.

Our flying club member with the trawler docked at McCovey Cove should
be back from vacation by 10/7. She likes to take the boat out and
party now and again. If you're interested email me at
.

Default Red Bull Air Races..

Hi Dan and to all readers
I've been at the Red Bull air race at Budapest one week ago. Okay, the
weather was fine, Budapest is a very nice city and life is not expensive.
Before this race, I've seen some others on the tv but what I've seen at
Budapest was the best of the best. Never seen such a great airshow with
acrobatics, military aircraft in action an many other performances before
the main event, the race with two runs. The race in Budapest is built up on
the river Donau between two bridges and that's the point. The pilots have to
fly under the bridge and the clock starts an he is in the box. Most of them
had only 2.5 meter between the surface and the gear.
And now the course which is built up in the front of the parlament building
in the heart of the city with 1.8 million people. Because the river is not
very wide, the pilots have to make very very sharp turns with partly 7 to 8
G, the planes fly only are few meters over the water, sometimes direct to
the spectatores, great positions of tv-cameras from helicopters bringing
pictures on big screens. You are only a few meters away from the race, you'
ve the best impression of speed, G-forces and the skill of pilots from an
other planet. Everyone who has avgas in the blood or loves flying - go to
Budapest. My friends and I we know what to do when Reb Bull air race will be
here in Budapest again. We go!
I've made some pictures. If anyone is interested I can give you access to
the pictures via yahoo.

Mary and I attended the inaugural Red Bull Air Race in the US, which
was held in 2004 at the Reno Air Races. It was awesome!

Here's what I wrote at the time:

Red Bull Air Race
***************************
The Red Bull Air Race was a new addition this year, and it proved to be
incredibly popular. A timed event, each aerobatic pilot had to fly
the
same closed course, marked by giant, inflatable pylons spaced directly
in
front of the grandstands. With specific assigned maneuvers, each pilot
threw his plane around the course with wild abandon, to the delight and
amazement of a very jaded and knowledgeable crowd.

The wind was really whipping, which made the course doubly exciting as
the
inflatable pylons waved ominously back and forth, seemingly trying to
knock
down the planes. They set up three gigantic "jumbotron" TVs out in
front of
the crowd, and, with live cameras transmitting from inside the
cockpits, you
could clearly see those giant pylons waving to and fro as each
competitor
knifed between them!

Coolest of all: Each pilot had to do a touch-and-go landing, on a 4
foot
patch of yellow chalk right in front of the stands -- coming out of a
loop!
If they missed, it was a huge penalty.

Exciting doesn't describe it!

That made the nightly local news here in Oregon. I flew straight off the
couch when they showed one airplane flying under the bridge. The news
anchors clearly couldn't believe their eyes either.

One of those times where the expression "AWESOME!" truly applies. Those
pilots have balls as big as churchbells!

Somewhat of an understatement, isn't it?

I'm enjoying perusing the rules. Apparently, pilots can get penalized for
"dangerous flying"...
