I wouldn't discount the Ventus. I have a few hours in one, and didn't find it any more demanding than other 15m gliders. And with the 18m tips, it was very pleasant indeed to fly.

If you have a glider (say 20 years old) with some patches of visible gel coat deterioration, is there any economy in painting the entire glider immediately? Would less sanding be needed? How would that affect the overall cost?

If the gelcoat is starting to fail, painting over it is not a good idea, it will continue to crack under the paint. Ive seen 2. LS4 finished in. Vorgelat that were painted without removing the gelcoat, both continued to crack under the paint needing complete removal and refinish. Vorgelat must be completely removed, schwaballac can be painted over fine before it cracks, which occurs much later than Vorgelat.

When did the transition from Vorgelat to Schwaballac happen?

So Vorgelat is less prone to cracking than Schwaballac? Is Schwaballac less prone to a botched refinishing job?

Vorgelat is the most prone to cracking, (preceded by yellowing) in part due to the use of fast hardeners to speed up the moulding process.
Schwaballac was used by DG Grob and early Glasflugel, it is no longer available due to its toxicity when used in manufacture.
LS, Sclecher and Schempp all used Vorgelat ot later Schuffler T35. It rarely last more than 10-15 years.
My DG202 schwaballac is still perfect, no cracking at all and 38 years old, it is VERY hard as well.
Vorgelat is banned here for refinishing.
Read the AN69 in the link, it goes into great detail.

I used Prestec for patching boo boos on my LS-6a.Â* It was easy to use
and to work with.

Dave Leonard:Â* What did you you use when you redid your 20 in your
basement?Â* Tell us about it, please.
