Another Downwind Dash
Saturday was the Kansas Kowbell Klassic free distance contest. Held
annually on the first safe saturday after the first full moon after the Summer Solstice. The Cherokee and I had a good flight, making a distance of 167 miles to a nice wheat field in southern Nebraska. Flight report is on my blog, http:/cherokeesailplanes.blogpost.com It was a struggle just to stay aloft for most of the flight while I flew mainly between 1500 and 2500 AGL but occasinoally as low as 800-1000 AGL and as high as 4000 AGL. I didn't feel like I was making great speed but the average came out to 37 mph which I feel was pretty good for the conditions. There was one time where I got to 4000 AGL where i was so brave as to push the speed up to a whopping 60 mph until I had lost 1000 feet. Pictures from the landout he http://picasaweb.google.com/abcondon/Kowbell# Leah and Summer were great crew, arriving within a half hour of my landing and we had the Cherokee on the trailer and ready to hit the road in another half hour. Sadly I fried my loaner Cambridge 20 GPS so no OLC trace this time. |
