Default Sunlight viewable display machinations

Qualcomm's Mirasol products and supposedly project
were discontinued in July, rumored difficulties
with production (yield cost etc ?). Fletcher imported
a Mirasol PDA from Korea and it looked good running
XCsoar (well, the replacement for the first unit that
died looked good).

Yet this morning:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/...8B20ZZ20121203

Qualcomm wouldn't be doing this unless they have
some of their own technology at stake, right ?
Can't just be slightly better LCDs.
Anybody know the scoop ?

See ya, Dave

Here's a better explanation of the deal:

I've been following the slow progress at http://pixelqi.com/ for several years.

They have a promising technology and a novel business plan. They're making progress in some niche ruggedized markets... military, surveying.

Maybe, eventually, someday, coming to a screen near you

PixelQI is essentially monochrome in sunlight.
Pixtronix is MEMS-gated LED backlight; brighter but not reflective.
We'll see...

Take a look at this YouTube video (scroll foreward to 14:32, if you don't want to watch the flight of the SB10)
I am not sure what kind this display is (the screen) but you can see it going in and out of shade/sunlight without any loss of readability. Any idea how that one works?
