Still here, although it's hard to find serious conversations about aviation.

I've gotta say, I'm pretty disappointed in the moderators over there.
I know one of them personally, and one of the others tangentially, and
I never expected them to act the way they did. Cutting off an on-
ongoing thread (for no apparent reason) is no better than having no
moderator at all.

That's the problem with all moderated forums. Good moderators are very, very
rare, and a bad moderator is orders of magnitude worse than no moderator at
all.

Yup, I've got to agree. Most of the time, it's MUCH nicer over there
-- but this sudden change of censorship has me worried.

So what's up in the simulation field? I left the Kiwi back at our
Iowa City hotel, so I haven't flown the sim in almost 7 months!

Did I hear that Microsoft is resurrecting the Flight Simulator
franchise?

Hi Dudley!

I've been spending most of my spare time over at PofA for the last
year, but I'm slowly learning that it's a good-ol'-boys network, led
by one guy who wields absolute authority over what is seen -- and not
seen -- on the group.

Although he's mostly a good guy, I'm growing uncomfortable with the
whole concept of being censored by a single guy -- even a well-meaning
one.

So what's new? How's Bea?

Selling the Ercoupe isn't a tough decision. *We bought it (with 2
other partners) so that our kids would have something cheap to fly,

fly, one is in Afghanistan, and one (my son) is 3rd year Army ROTC at
the University of Iowa, and working at our Iowa City hotel. *He hasn't
had time to fly in a year.

As much as I enjoyed flying Sweetie, we've still got Atlas, and that's
more than enough airplane for one family.

PofA is okay, but I miss the old days of rec.aviation. *I think I'll
stick around a bit and see if any of the other "old-timers" are still
around!

Hi Jay. Yea, still check in here occasionally, but it's mostly a ghost town except for the
troll wars. *I hope your new venture is doing well. I read recently on POA that you're
selling the Ercoupe. That's a tough decision, but understandable.

Mike

I still check the thread headers from time to time but seldom post
here any more. I'll check in with a fw of the old timers that have
become friends through the years, but the rest of it for me anyway,
isn't my cup of tea.

According to his account info, he is 23. A bit green.
Given the light moderation, I think they aren't doing too bad. They just
need some "free advice," of which I have oodles to give.

Actually they name 6 people on their "MC" but if one of them is doing all
the technical work and paying most of the on-going bills, the other 5 are
just super cargo.

Besides, you did manage to post a message that insulted a subset of pilots
- even if you technically didn't write it, you quoted it. I barely had time
to insult you back. Where's the justice in that?

And you got your courtesy car back from the "jerks". Hopefully the incident
didn't cause any real friction in your family.

Yeah, I've met Spike and Adam, two of the volunteer moderators. They
are outstanding guys -- but subservient to Jesse. (Heck, they both
work a brazillion hours per week -- they don't have time to do much
more than they are doing.)

And Jesse seems like a well-meaning kid. I have NO idea why he (or
one of the others) got a bean up their butt about that thread, but so
be it. They killed it, and lost my faith, for whatever that's worth.

That's the wonderful part about the internet. There are literally a
dozen, (maybe a hundred?) other forums to play in.

As for insulting a subset of aviation, my friend's quote was pretty
tame stuff. I'm sure we can do better here...

It's funny -- over there, we can't be "****ed" at anyone -- but we can
call 'em an "asshole". Go figure!

I realize that the POA MC doesn't explain that very well,
but observing a few closed threads makes it pretty clear.
The flow seems to always go like this: *a discussion goes
on for a number of posts, then there are some back-and-forth
insults (real or perceived, deserved or not), someone complains,
the thread is closed, and finally the participants complain
that the thread was closed.

That's all fine and dandy, but at some level the only effective
moderator is one who is consistent and EXPLAINS THEIR ACTIONS.
Random acts of censorship do nothing to breed a community.

If you read Jesse's response to Jim and my inquiries, it was a
terrific example of a non-response, explaining nothing. We still have
no idea why the thread was closed -- hell, if anyone had a right to
cry to the moderator, it was ME -- and his attitude is "if you don't
like it, there's the door".

Disappointing.

Rumors only. If it comes back, it will probably be as a game.
