New LXNAV S8 vario
Hi,
LXNAV has just announced their new S8 stand-along speed-to-fly vario with navigation and optional AHRS. It is very much like the new S80, but the S8 fits into a small 57 mm instrument hole. You can see details he http://www.cumulus-soaring.com/lxnav.htm#LXNAV-S8 LXNAV says it will not replace the V7 variometer. It is more advanced than the V7 with more built-in sensors and capability. The price will be about $1950 for the S8. The optional AHRS software enable upgrade is $1120. Like the S80, it is a great replacement for many older varios - such as the ILEC SN10, SC-7 and Cambridge L-NAV and S-NAV flight computers. Good Soaring, Paul Remde Cumulus Soaring, Inc. |

If I install the S8 with AHRS in my sailplane, will this disqualify me from flying in contests due to rule 6.6?
Which states: "Each sailplane is prohibited from carrying any instrument which: * Permits flight without reference to the ground." With smart phones, iPads. synthetic vision, does anyone thing this is a bit antiquated? Virtually everyone has an artificial horizon in the pocket. Plus it is both illegal and stupid to fly instruments without being on an IFR flight plan.

Thanks for the replies. I suppose since it can be disabled it would meet rule 6.6. I think for clarity the RC should list the S8 in the "Approved Instruments" document. Just so us newbies are clear on this issue.
Sorry if this subject has been brought up already. I did a search for it but did not find one. |
