. .. I'll be flying in to Houston Hobby in a few days. Any tips for a little plane driver? There's a few flight schools on the airport, so the controllers are used to dealing with students / low time pilots who might not be comfortable at a Class-B towered airport... Watch out for the intersection of Rwy 35 and Rwy 04 -- there's a bump that can get you back airborn if you still have a bit of speed when you cross it while landing on 35... But then again, that would require the winds to be out of the north and that hardly *ever* happens around here... At night, the airport is hard to find due to all the lights of the city encroaching upon it... You don't see the runway lights until you are nearly already lined up on the runway... Oh, BTW, why you flying into there when there are so many smaller airports around town? |

My sister lives in west Houston and I was think about going and see her. Do you
have any reconditions on smaller airports in the west Houston area? On Thu, 27 Apr 2006 18:39:06 GMT, "Grumman-581" wrote: Oh, BTW, why you flying into there when there are so many smaller airports around town? GeorgeC |

Thanks!
"Michael" wrote in message oups.com... Houston Hobby is a total non-event for the little airplane driver. They even have a flight school - solo students fly in and out of there. No landing fee. The hardest part is taxiing on the surface. Get a copy of the taxiway diagram - it will put you one step ahead. The key thing is LISTEN for your call sign, fly the assigned headings, and look for the airport. If you talk to approach, they usually want you to report the field in sight before the handoff to tower. The earlier you can take the handoff, the easier it is. If you are sloppy about your headings/altitudes or require more than one call on the radio, you may get penalty vectors to Sugarland, adding 5-10 minutes to your flight. Michael |
