Mexico actually applied for admission to the United States as a state on

one
occasion.

talk about a missed opportunity....

maybe we can trade mexico for california or southern florida as a state?

There might be some merit to that. :-)

Actually, Mexico applied soon after throwing the Spanish out. Mexico thought
that becoming a state would help keep the Spanish away. The problem was that
Congress could not agree on the terms of admission. Texas was not yet a
state or even independent, but Mexico was treating Texas as if it was not
really part of Mexico, imposing customs and regulating travel. Andrew
Jackson, who hated Mexicans, did not want any part of it. In fact, even
though Jackson liked Texas, he was largely responsible for keeping Texas as
an independent republic for ten years.

Congress did not particularly like the idea of admitting Mexico, noting the
widespread political instability. Many Congressmen thought that Mexico would
cost more to govern than what it was worth. Texas as an independent republic
had banned slavery, but could only gain admission to the US as a slave state
(apparently the irony of re-introducing slavery into freedom-loving Texas
was lost on American politicians). Debate over whether Mexico would be a
slave state would have been intense, to say the least, and might even have
started a civil war.

Since Congress would not admit Mexico, the country went through a swift
series of power changes, culminating in the rise of General Santa Anna, who
had distinguished himself against the Spanish. Santa Anna was determined to
put down the constant local insurrections and to especially bring Texas back
into line.

If Mexico had been admitted to the United States, Santa Anna would
undoubtedly have been used by the Army to establish law and order there and
the general would probably be remembered as an historic American figure and
Indian fighter of the Old West. He might have eventually suffered a fate
similar to that of Custer. Mexico probably would have been a slave state and
fought on the side of the South in the Civil War. Much, if not all, of the
rest of Central America and possibly even some of Spanish South America
would also have become part of the United States. With such a large Hispanic
population, the United States probably would have had more Spanish
institutions in its own government, might have been more politically
unstable, and the US would have had all the problems of dealing with the
terrorists and insurgents that have plagued the region, but few more
resources to work with.

All in all, it is probably better that Mexico was turned down, even though
it meant that several more wars would be fought over boundary disputes.

and how would the Mexicans decide today if they had the choice?
and why exactly pro/against? (OK, there are some obvious reasons pro)

I asked you if you were a racist.

A stupid question deserves no answer -- especially from someone who
hides behind a fake name.

Actually, we're all watching the two of you waste bandwidth in a newsgroup
about aviation... I don't think anyone here REALLY cares which one of you
is less tolerant of the other.
