Any suggestions?

The nearest airport is Leadville; Dan who runs the FBO is a fantastic
guy, and there's nowhere better to do mountain flying.

Agreed, that's a cool airport. My friend Wes flys out of there and
took me up last October. Here's some pics to drool over:

Absolutely stunning!!! Much prettier than North Central Texas. I make a
annual trip in February to go skiing in Summit County.

Matt, did you get a bigger airplane and find a pilot that you put out an
inquiry for last Fall?

As for being mountain flying, Andrew's right. It's more appropriately
considered "high altitude airport" flying.

That's true, but they have a mountain flying course where they'll take
you to the tricky nearby airports.

As for being mountain flying, Andrew's right. It's more appropriately
considered "high altitude airport" flying. But the town of Leadville
is also fun, altho devoted to tourists. But then, so is the entire
Summit County (Breck, ABasin, Keystone, Frisco, Silverthorne, etc).
While you're at Breck, have dinner at the Minturn Country Club (no
ties or suits needed).

And definitely go to Glenwood Springs. Remember to bring a swim suit
for the hot springs.

Don't forget to bring a poker chip to leave with Doc Holliday!

That inquiry last Spring? I found a very nice young fellow to fly for us
for four months after I was grounded following surgery. I would have loved
to keep him on, but he was _commuting_ from SLC and could not relocate
permanently. Good thing, too, as we moved back to the Front Range after a
nine year hiatus.

Actually, I wasn't looking for a _bigger_ plane, but more all-weather
capable. MOF, I did sell by Bo last December and moved to a four place in
February, being an empty-nester now :~(

With the market constricting badly, the more area I can cover, the less the
market slide will effect us.

Best,

Matt

Subject: Mountain/Canyon flying: CO/ID/UT!

There are a few openings available in the Idaho back country
mountain flying courses this summer. If you are interested in the
next level of flying, it may be mountain, canyon and back country
flying! Please consider attending one of these seminars with back
country instruction this summer!

If you have heard about the Idaho back country, then you know what I
mean. If you haven't, then please consider browsing and putting
McCall, Idaho on your summer adventure list! McCall is an excellent
place from which to launch into the Idaho back country. There are
50 airstrips in the Frank Church "River of No Return" Wilderness
area, and nearby back country. This is the coolest place in the
lower 48.. of course Alaska is better, but it is a long way away.

I've been, it is GREAT! I am on staff for a few weeks this summer.

MOUNTAIN FLYING - HIGH ELEVATION AIRPORT OPERATIONS GROUND SCHOOLS

WHEN: Saturdays:
June 16, 2007 at Centennial Airport (APA), Denver, Colo.
August 11, 2007 at Centennial Airport (APA), Denver, Colo.

Centennial Airport (APA). SPONSORED BY THE COLORADO AIR SAFETY
FOUNDATION: The Colorado Air Safety Foundation is a non-profit
corporation organized and operated exclusively for the purpose of
promoting and furthering education and public safety in the aviation
industry. In Colorado, accident statistics show that pilots without
the skills needed for safe flight over mountainous terrain often get
themselves in situations which are beyond their capability to
handle. The mountain flying course is a program developed to
improve that capability.

THE COURSE: The ground school course was originally developed by the
Colorado Pilots Association in 1986. It is presented in Colorado at
least twice each year and occasionally at out-of-state locations. It
is taught by Colorado pilots who live and fly the mountains in
business and recreational flying. Through the years it has evolved
into one of the premier safety training courses of its kind.

The course takes the student on a simulated flight over several
mountain passes and into a number of high elevation mountain
airports. Instructors take time to discuss factors affecting the
safety of flight at each step on the route and make extensive use of
aerial photography and a technical workbook to illustrate
information needed for a safe flight. The workbook is part of the
course materials provided under the registration fee for the course.
