Default Basic and possibly stupid question

With all these pirates running loose why aren't ships defending
themselves with some real firepower?

Are deck guns no longer made?

So they elect to listen to the lawyers and ply the seas defenseless?

I carry a firearm every time I am afloat . I've encountered merchant
ships dropping "gray whales" just off our coast and had rather argue
in court than be a pussy.

There's no reason why Naval Armed Guards are not deployed on merchant
ships except that no one has asked for them.

There's also some maritime treaties and regs involved. Probably has to
do with what is a merchantman and you know how lawyers are, any
loophole to avoid paying a claim...
