Default Soaring apps for iPhone

Hi,

I see that the TrackLog web site does allow for tracking groups, but I
haven't played with it yet.

I found that although TrackLog works in Internet Explorer, it works better
(more information displayed) in Safari.

Good Soaring,

Hi Werner, and everyone,

That looks like a very cool app.

I installed it on my iPhone and entered my iPhone ID into the TrackLog web
page and it displayed my current position on the map. I think it would
allow someone to follow my glider flight in real time.

I don't see where it is possible to setup the display interval (as
mentioned below).

It would be neat if it could display the locations of multiple iPhones on
a single map. Perhaps it can and I just haven't found that feature yet on
the web site. That would be great for use at the local soaring club, or
at contests.

The web site is: http://tracklog.streckenflug.ch

This could make SPOT tracking at contests obsolete - at least for owners
of iPhones. I can't wait to use it at a soaring contest this summer. Of
course, it doesn't replace the emergency features that a SPOT offers.

Very cool!

Just got one of these Apple gizmos and I'm curious what apps other
glider guiders are using. So far I've found some nice non-aviation
weather and mapping apps, so now I'm looking for a good NOTAM and
aviation wx brief app.

How about SPOT, XCskies, DrJack?

Hi Kirk, I found a nice little app called TrackLog. Allows you to
follow a flight on real time on the computer with spots (intervals)
every 3 sec or whatever you choose.

Just that cell phone network thingy to sort out. But when it does not
work as a tracker it serves as a handy AT&T coverage map generator. :-

Nice looking app however.

Yeah, as Darryl pointed, that cell phone network thingy makes it
pretty much worthless unless you fly below 3000 ft AGL near good
reception area. I tried it and it worked nice until I climbed to above
3-4000 ft. It will also eat your battery really quick, like an hour or
less. Good for tracking pattern flights :-)

Hi,

I look forward to trying it anyway. It may work better than you think. I
hope it does.

Best Regards,

Paul Remde

I wont be holding my breath. It's a nice idea but a practical non-
starter.

Wouldn't say that. It was used at last years Swiss Nationals and
Junior Nationals for live tracking of 8-10 competitors and -
admittedly over densely populated areas i.e good cellphone coverage
most of the time - worked fine!

Got it. Will try it.

I don't think it has been mentioned, but WindAlert is a pretty cool
free app that has weather station info. Not aviation specific, it's
actually primarily a Kiteboarding and Windsurfing centric app. It
will give you a map view of weather stations with surface temperature/
wind data as well it can trigger alerts and notifications based on
your personalized settings.

If you're familiar with Weather Underground Wundermaps, it pretty
much will give you the same view as well as detailed info and trends
on specific sites.

It works great on the ridge and if you are a little creative you can
power it from your batteries!

Just stumbled upon another great app for the iPhone:
http://www.spot4mobile.com/SPOT4Mobile/Home.html
If you ever tried using the Spot Share page on the iPhone you know how
dificult it is. This app resolves it by using Google Map instead.
Works great and well worth the $3 price tag.
There is also a version for Blackberry.

Enjoy,

Ramy
