The authors of articles like the following would rather you not scrutinize
the underlying philosophy or thinking that yielded them:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_plane_crash_small_planes

Anyone recall any "even handed" articles that drew attention to the
"security gap" caused by all those trucks on the road after this famous
event?:

Unfortunately, most readers will not scrutinize anything, but will simply take
the authors at their word.

Background checks would not have stopped this pilot, and he (apparently) had
no passengers with him, and his aircraft was small.

Trying to police general aviation is like trying to police every car and truck
on the road. The only difference is that just about everyone drives, so nobody
wants restrictions on that, whereas very few people fly. Pilots and their
hobby are perceived as elitists engaging in an activity that the rest of
society could do without because of its "danger."

Spend your money contributing to organizations that lobby in favor of GA, or
write the handful of representatives you're allowed to elect and tell them
what you think. If you don't work to maintain your freedoms, they go away.

"Texas plane crash demonstarates that light aircraft are **** poor weapons
of mass desctuction"

He managed to only kill one person. How many do the typical suicide bomber
kill? The typical nutcase with a gun? A drunk driver with a car?

Compared to the what he did with the airplane, he did a better job on his
own house with a 5 gallon can of gas...

Objectively, that is completely true, but most people don't look at things
objectively, even among those whose job it is to remain objective.

Now I'll have to order the software upgrade from Raytheon for my
backyard Patriot battery.

Actually, the kill ration is even worse that 1:1. I recall three
planes crashing into buildings: One kid in Florida, The baseball
player in NYC, and this one. So it took three planes crashing into
three buildings before one person died.

I think there was a guy in NH who crashed into his or his wife's empty
house, so you can make it 4:1 for pilots to victims.
