Jail Time For Drone Pilot
Jail Time For Drone Pilot
http://www.avweb.com/eletter/archive...3604-full.html The pilot of a drone that hit a building, then fell into a crowd watching a parade and hit a 25-year-old woman, knocking her unconscious, has been sentenced to 30 days in jail by a Seattle municipal court. Paul Skinner, 38, of Washington, who owns an aerial photography company, was convicted of reckless endangerment, which carries a penalty of up to a year in jail. Seattle Municipal Court Willie Gregory told Skinner last week that he knew the crash was an accident, but he had "engaged in conduct that put people in danger of being injured, which is what happened." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://nypost.com/2017/02/28/man-get...ed-two-people/ Man gets jail time for drone mishap that injured two people By Gabrielle Fonrouge February 28, 2017 | 10:48am Modal Trigger Man gets jail time for drone mishap that injured two people A Seattle man was sentenced to 30 days in jail last week after his drone fell from the sky and injured two people during a pride parade in 2015, according to reports. Paul Skinner, 38, was found guilty of reckless endangerment and fined $500 by the Seattle Municipal Court after his unmanned aerial vehicle struck a woman in the head, knocking her unconscious. The 25-year-old woman was standing at an intersection during the 2015 Seattle Pride Parade when the 18-by-18-inch drone crashed into a building and fell into the crowd, severely injuring her and bruising another. Judge Willie Gregory told Skinner, who owns an aerial photography company, said he recognizes the incident was an accident, but that Skinner “engaged in conduct that put people in danger of being injured, which is what happened,” according to the Seattle Times. According to FAA regulations, drone operators may not fly “over anyone who is not directly participating in the operation, not under a covered structure, or not inside a covered stationary vehicle.” Prosecutor Pete Holmes, who wanted a 90-day sentence, said misusing drones is a “serious public-safety issue that will only get worse.” Skinner’s attorneys plan to appeal, but regardless of the outcome, he’s still required to take a certified class on drone safety. This comes after a speeding drone crashed through a Manhattan woman’s 27th-floor window Saturday. The 66-year-old woman told The Post she would’ve been severely injured had the drone not got caught in her blinds. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://gizmodo.com/dumbass-convicted...-kn-1791240314 Dumbass Convicted Over Pride Parade Drone Crash That Knocked Woman Out Cold Hudson Hongo 1/15/17 10:00pm\ Seattle’s 41st Annual Pride Parade. On Friday, a 38-year-old man was found guilty of reckless endangerment in connection with a drone crash at Seattle’s 2015 pride parade that left an attendee unconscious. According to authorities, Paul Skinner was flying a two-pound drone above the parade when it crashed into a building and went tumbling into the crowd. It eventually struck a 25-year-old woman’s head, knocking her out and into her boyfriend’s arms. At the time, police told NBC News the victim suffered “not a gentle concussion.” After a brief search for the unidentified drone pilot, Skinner ultimately came forward. He’s now scheduled to be sentenced in February and could face up to 364 days in jail and a $5,000 fine. In a similar (albeit far less injurious) incident last week, a pilot crashed a drone into the Space Needle while filming. The city said it also considering reckless endangerment charges against that pilot. I share your sentiment regarding drone operators; however I believe commercial drone operators must hold an airman's certificate.
