I am seeking an inexpensive (ha, ha) portable recorder that can be used for a silver distance badge. All opinions welcomed.

You won't regret investing in an IGC approved logger. They much easier for
you and your official observer to use than a "Position Recorder".

If you plan your flight to land at another airport you only need a barograph and witnesses at your landing location. Something like a Replogle is
adequate for that, and very cheap nowadays.

According to the minutes of the 2014 IGC Plenary, deleting stand-alone barographs passed as a year 1 proposal, and will be voted on next year, for inclusion in 2016 Sporting Code. Don't invest too much in a Replogle lest you have an expensive paperweight. I think the "FlywithCE" position recorder is the answer up to Gold Badges - until everyone has a PowerFLARM, good up to Diamonds. If your resources are greater, the Nano is very nice and reliable too.

Well, he asked for cheap and you can probably find a Replogle for $20 or
less [some on eBay for $10] and it will be good until at least 2016
apparently.

I easily found some paperweights that cost twice that much. :)

I have a nice Barograph, but the gentleman in western up state NY doesn't calibrate any more. He also knows of no one that will calibrate it.
Anyone...anyone?

I have owned the FlywithCE FR300 for 2 years now and have been very happy with the performance. You can declare tasks with the downloaded software/logbook, download flights and analyze them with SeeYou, Google Earth or other programs and the device was approved for badges including altitudes (with a 100m? margin.) I just hang it around my neck, remember to turn it on before each flight and off afterwards, and then take it home that night for analysis of the multiple flights.

Nano's are obviously excellent, but so much more expensive. Oudie IGC is even better, and even more expensive. At my club most silver distance attempts now use the FR 300 - and accept the 100m extra height margin required. As an Observer I am quite happy with it - (I downloaded the software to my laptop).
