What's your response when you tell someone you're going flying and they say
"Be careful."?

I know the comment is well intended, but I've seen some of these people
drive (and eat), and trust me, my flying is far safer than what they do to
themselves on a daily basis.

Mostly, I say "Thank you.", but from time to time, I go into a sermon about
how flying is pretty safe IF you don't do stupid things like run out of gas
or fly in conditions beyond your abilities. Then I realize I probably bored
someone or came across too strong and revert back to "Thank you".

And there are times I'm tempted to say "Naah, it would be the hilight of my
day to end up at the bottom a smoking hole in the airplane I built."

I usually just answer.. "Always... and Thank You"..

I wouldn't see this as anything other than someone expressing a wish
that you don't get hurt, which is simply a verbal expression of caring
what happens to you.

To make something other than out of it might be to read into it your own
slant rather than what was intended by the person making the comment.
Shakespeare had it right; "Much Ado About Nothing" :-)

To be perfectly honest, I've got almost a superstition about my wife saying "Be
careful" when I leave for the airport. Doesn't feel right if she's not there to
say it. I usually respond, "OK, just this once." Anyone else, I just say, "As
ever."

People say it for all sorts of things, not just flying. Moms in particular
are prone to say it about anything that incorporates even the tiniest
suggestion of risk.

Or you gave them new things to worry about: "You mean there are flights beyond
your abilities??"

The dame as I expect when I tell someone headed into town, on a trip,
or the kids/grand kids going out to play. "OK", or "I'll try".

Be cqareful is not something specific to flying and it's a nautral
parting caution for almost any reason.

It hink we become far too sensitive to throughtful, parting comments.
I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt.

I don't think it's any different than me telling my wife "Drive Carefully"
when she goes to the store.

It's simply showing someone you care about them.
