It is nice to see Rare Bear back in the air after being down
for so many years. I saw the Bear win at Reno back in the
early 90's when it was dominating the sport. There was no
sweeter sound on this planet than the sound of the Bear passing
by on full power. The water-cooled inline engines just don't
compare when it comes to sound.

Who was the pilot? John Penny?

Yep. Here's the site: http://www.airrace.org/indexJS.php

Jet class? When did that start?

Sure. There is plent of aero-wanking in between all of the politics.

As someone said, "A good defence is a good offence" so, what do youhave
to add?

Did you attend and, if so, what else did you see?

Anything cool?

Vlado, how long do you think these air races using WWII
aircraft and parts can go on?

Racing puts huge stresses on engines, and I'd think
each aircraft would be going through engines like
grass through a cow! How many times can you rebuild
an Allison or Merlin?

Are there newly manufactured engines for this demand?
It would seem not according to an article in Air And
Space last year.

And the air frames themselves. Seems you can only keep
a Mustang on Bear frame good for so long, and we're now
talking 60 years!

Are other than WWII aircraft being used for these races?

The races can go on for quite some time. Airframes are not a problem as many
new parts can be easily manufactured, cost only being the limiting factor.
Engine parts are becoming scare, but someone always seems to step up to make
new parts again. The customized WW2 racers may not be as common as their
market values keep rising, but the new sport class of Glassairs, etc. will
continue the race events as well as the T-6 aircraft and other homebuilts.
My 2 cents,
