Komet trailer interior floor refinish

I am considering refinishing the wood floor of my 80's era Komet
trailer over the coming weeks. The current plywood floor is in fair
shape but could use a coat of paint. I'd like to go for the painted
glossy look of those new trailers! The wood flooring is currently
stained...in some areas...

The paint specialist at Lowe's recommended an Oil Porch & Floor Paint
from Valspar:

This paint apparently works well on wood but is not recommended for
"automotive parking". Thus, I am wondering how good it will do over
time with the rubber wheels of the fuselage dolly.

Alternatively, I looked at Epoxy type paints systems typically
formulated for garage flooring. Probably durable but mainly designed
for concrete applications.

My floor could use refinishing too. I'll be interested to know what
you try and how it works out. In my trailer, the fuselage dolly
wheels had worn through at least one ply of the plywood floor. I
cemented 4" wide rubber baseboard to the floor where the wheels ride.
It seems to be holding up very nicely (about 2 years now).

A guy in our club did the same thing several years back. IIRC, he
used marine paint, which is formulated for plywood and for wet
environments. Deck paint in particular is designed to be abrasion
resistant. One word of caution though - the stuff is usually
expensive (very). See for example: http://www.westmarine.com and
look for Paint under Maintenance.

I have gone through two Komet trailer refinishes. For the fiberglass
top part I used silver epoxy based paint that I bought in home depot.
I used that to stop sunlight from going through the top and damaging
what was left of my LS4 gelcoat .

For the floor I used a marine gray paint that I bought at west marine
(any marine paint will do). I sanded the floor for improved
adhesion... and as Papa3 mentioned... that stuff IS expensive!

For the fuselage tray roller tracks, I used a L shaped aluminum
channel. That improved rolling the fuselage in and out and also
prevented further erosion of the wood, since both of my trailers were
developing groves, if not holes on that area...

You might look into 2 part rubberized epoxy used in some parking
garages. I used something called CM 1000 from Specialty Coatings in
Seattle on a marine application over plywood. Bulletproof, fairly
pricey, not sure about colors.

Thank you all for the tips about the floor paint. Marine paints should
hold nicely given the plywood substrate & humidity. Does anyone know
if the primer is a must have for these pricey marine paints?

Enrique - Regarding the silver epoxy paint, I assume that you painted
the inside of the fiberglass top cover. Why the silver pigments? What
type of application typically use these silver epoxy paints? I want to
make sure to pickup the right stuff.

Bastoune:

You are right. I painted the interior of the trailer. My intention was
to block sunlight (UV rays!) from going through the top and further
damaging gelcoat. Friends suggested silver because allegedly it
"reflects" better, though I don't see how... I beleive any color will
do as long as it blocks sunlight.. silver just looked nice! ;-)
