AI/DG Overhaul shops

Hey all. I posted a week or so ago about an AI that had gone TU.
I'm figuring to do a complete vacuum system overhaul on my Cherokee and
was looking for suggestions on places to have gyros redone. I've talked
with Kelly instruments, and they seem to be relatively inexpensive and
have high turn-around (currently a few day's wait).

Any thoughts on overhauled/exchanged vs. an overhaul of the
current unit? The ones in there now are an EDO-AIRE (Piper) 5000B-9 AI
and an Aviation Instrument (for Mitchell) 200-5 DG.

Anyone recommend specific shops for this? Warranties? Failure
rates?

And I replied that you probably have one of those great new-generation with
old-fashioned quality and I'd hold on to it for all it is worth.

I've used "The Gyro House" in Auburn CA for almost 30 years and have yet to have
either my own or my customer come up with an infant mortality.

As to Mike's suggestion to upgrade to one with a flag...just something else to
go wrong. I'd prefer a vacuum switch teed into the vacuum line and a warning
light on the panel.

And I think the general opinion of folks in the know (not the non
owners/flyers was to go new rather than have something rebuilt for
almost the same price. So I guess if you would like to hear what you
want to really do, I say go for the cheapest o/h house you can find.
That way, in about a year you'll be qualified to answer with the
general populace when the question appears again.
