As of 3:30p, Gordon Boettger and Hugh Bennett flying a Duo Discus, are
on the third leg entering the Owens Valley.. Conditions are, as they
say in the meteorology world, SCREAMIN', as they've been at max speed
speed most of the time. Follow the flight on the spot page:

There was a bit of a hiccup at Mono Lake on the 2nd leg, but they got
past that. Target landing is at least Winnemucca for about 2100km,
but with extra luck they can hit McDermitt for 2300km or so.

Gordon and Hugh are down safely at Winnemucca Airport. I've called
the FBO, Buster, and he's on his way out. Rick Walters is just
arriving now too.

Unbuckingfelievable!!!
That was an incredible achievement, and a superlative soaring
achievement. Gordon and Hugh, I salute you.
Consider that 2100km is farther than the summed assigned task
distances of an entire regional contest!

Fantastic flight... Congratulations Gordon and Hugh.. !!
Kempton alerted me around 3:30pm so I watched in awe the SPOT tracks
all the way to sunset.
Also captured some upper air charts, raobs and satellite photos. They
are all zipped up at around 9.8MB here:

The satellite photos start around 2100Z or 2pm PDT and continue to
sunset. All of them are in the zipped file every 15 minutes for two
regions; one centered on Reno and the other Las Vegas. Converted them
to a 1fps video here:

Amazing mountain wave clouds along practically the entire flight..

Thanks Walt, I was also capturing the dustcams at Mono & Owens Lake.
Lots of good material for the documentary. Tom Serkowski's too.
Another good reason to mark your calendar for Feb 2-4 to attend the
SSA Convention in Reno this winter. This will be a super
presentation!
