If you install another ADF, like a KR-87, you will need a new antenna.

I wouldn't waste money on a 85. Here is a nice one:

Thanks but it's far too soon to replace yet. It's only the pointer not
working. Audio is ok so either sticking pointer or driver circuit in
the receiver. Hopefully repairable but just wondered if a replacement
would be economical or need the full works!.
