Check the paint -- if there's any left -- on the under-side of the elevator.

That'll tell the tale.

Personally, I'd be way more concerned about damage to the propellor.

Look at the prop. Leading edge damage will be much more common. Also leading
edge of the tailplane, and the underside of the same.

Me, too, but someone selling a plane would probably make sure the prop
showed no signs of damage.

It's a lot harder to hide the underside of the elevator.

No, but you're likely to ding the prop and maybe the paint on the lower tail
surfaces.
