View Full Version : PA-12 Super Cruiser - Speed on Final

Hi

I am hoping there are some PA-12 pilots out there. I was wondering what
speed you use on final. I did all of my private in the PA-12 and was
taught to be at 75 mph on final but I can't find any specific reference
to the speed.

That's way too fast. Try 50 mph for a normal landing, 40-45 for wedging
it in short.

That seems a bit slow given my published stall speed of 48!

Buddy of mine has a pa-12, it doesn't stall at 48 mph. And even if it
did stall at 48 mph, 75 mph final is still way to fast. With a 48 mph
stall I'd use 55-58 mph. Go out and see what your plane actually stalls
at. If your owners manual is like mine the stall speed is listed as a
calibrated airspeed. You're not reading CAS on your airspeed indicator.

Well, I got my PPL in a 'Cruiser' but I don't remember the exact speeds
from forty years ago. It does seem that 75 MPH is mighty fast on final
for a plane that stalls at 49 MPH. I think that 65 would be good.

Vapr or Vref whatever you prefer is typically 1.3*Vso.
That means on your PA-12 your Vso is around 58 if you were told Vref was 75.

I don't fly a PA-12, but this is the formula for most small aircraft.

Then remember that Vref goes down 5% for every 10% decrease in gross weight.

Lacking any published data, 1.3Vso works well, so 62mph .

From my syllabus here are the recommended numbers:
Vx=65 mph
Vy=75 mph
V glide = 60 mph
Economy cruise 2200 rpm = 90-95 mph
Normal cruise 2400 rpm = 105 mph
Final 1.3 Vso = 65 mph
Final 1.2 Vso (short field) 60 mph

Trim - Note when flying solo from the front seat there is not enough
aft trim to hold a 60-65 mph altitude while in the landing pattern.

Engine failure: Slow to 55 mph on final.

75 is way way too fast especially if you are the only occupant. For me,
solo, 60 mph seemed to work well for full stall landings. For wheel
landings solo add 5 mph.
