Is it okay to chrome a spinner

Ir sure is, Mine has been done for 5 years.
The trick is to find someone who will
or can Chrome Aluminum. The guy who
did mine said he would not do another one.

That said, we've got one -- and it's fine.

Not usually. The plating process makes the metal more brittle.

This marriage is off to a shaky start. The groom just asked the band to
play "Your cheatin' heart", and the bride just requested "Don't come home
a'drinkin' with lovin' on your mind".

Regarding "chrome spinners" - it's probably better to *polish* the thing if
it's aluminum.
It'll get just as shiny, and no worries about hydrogen embrittlement, etc.
The Swift folks are reputed to put out good polishing information; also do
a Google
search on "Nuvite". From what I hear, it's one of the "magic compounds"
used.

No it isn't. You'll change the hardness of the material and if it
lasts, it'll eventually peel like an old lemon. If it doesn't, pieces
may hit you as they're breaking off.

I DID Google it. I didn't come up with much. So it must not be TOO
persistent because lots of searching hasn't turned up much. So instead
of just posting a "NO" .. quote some reference such as an AC or reg or
something I can go by .. or don't post a response. The purpose of this
group is to share information related to ownership issues .. not to simply
give a terse answer and tell owners to look somewhere else.

The aircraft I bought has a chrome spinner on it. Of the 5 aircraft I've
owned, none has had a chrome spinner. I have concerns about legality
and safety and so I asked for imformation. The spinner was chromed
11 yrs ago and shows no signs of cracks or other problems. But I am
aware that chroming alters the metal in the spinner.

IF you don't like his advice, just refuse to pay him for it. This is usenet, man.

Otis,

Call your FSDO, and ask them (hint, you wont like the answer)

Call your IA, and ask him (hint, if he's worth a damn, you wont
like his answer)

Do the following Google Groups search:

chrome spinner legal OR crack OR faa OR fsdo OR IA group:rec.aviation.*

(hint, after reading the 43 messages, you wont like the gist of these
postings, either)

So far, the postings in response to your question here have not added
anything that hasn't been posted on this topic since 1995.

Google groups search for "chrome spinner group:rec.aviation.*"
gets 170 hits.

Probably not. But why bother? Simply removing the paint from an aluminum
spinner and polishing the bare metal is relatively easy and inexpensive.
You can even do it yourself, since it's not a control surface. Properly
polished, the bare aluminum will be almost as shiny as chrome. The only
(very minor) negative is that aluminum is more prone to staining, so you
will have to polish a bit more frequently than you would with chrome.

We did this a couple of years ago on our Arrow, with good results. The
whole effort took about one day using a kit we got at OSH.

Better yet. Get some good polish and hand rub it to a nice shine.
During the WHOLE process wear gloves so the acids in your skin doesn't
get on the surface. Wrap it in a clean towel and look in the local
phone book under powdercoating. There will be several if ya live in a
decent sized town. Find the one who is the most reasonable. Take it to
him and have them clear powdercoat it.The stuff is bulletproof and
will not alter the metal. Remind the guys doing the work to wear
gloves while handling it too. It should cost somewhere in the
25.00-35.00 dollar range.

With an attitude like that, I say let the ******* chrome his spinner
and take his chances.

Thanks, Stu.

I appreciate being called a *******. For asking a question with
both safety and legality implications. What's this group for if
not to exchange information related to ownership? If someone
asked me a question I would try to help them, not tell them
they're a ******* and have an attitude. I'm sure sorry I didn't
have initial success searching for info and if I offended you
by asking.

Thanks, Mike, for a civil answer. I'm going to talk to my A&P and one
of the FSDO guys based at our airport. My inclination is to remove
it and get a new one.

With an answer like this;

"quote some reference such as an AC or reg or
something I can go by .. or don't post a response."

I'll call you whatever I think of you at the time. "Ungrateful
*******" was too long to type. If you don't want the pros and cons,
don't post.
