View Full Version : Stolen Engines

The engines/props were stolen off a twin that had been sitting for 4
years (the auction of the plane is on Ebay). Just wondering if the
serial numbers are in a FAA or maintenance database somewhere and
could be traced as to where they are now. Any other ideas how to find
them? If they were shipped out overseas, would there also be a record?
Thanks.

The original serial numbers of the engines installed would be in the records
from the manufacturer. If the engines were replaced rather than overhauled at
any time then the only records would be in the logbooks and the work order
records of the installing agency. There is no requirement to inform the FAA of
an engine change.
If the engines were modified with a form 337 filed that would be with the FAA
including the serial numbers.
If the engines were shipped out of the country the serial numbers would
probably be recorded by the shipping agency but they would not have to inform
the FAA. If the receiving country has similar import regulations to the US
then the engines would have to be re certified as airworthy before they could
be used but you would have to know what country they might have gone to.

And that's about what it's worth right now.

Uh...yeah.
This plane was last used four years ago and has been sitting in the
air field since.Air frame wings, fuel tanks and landing gear are in
great shape.
Ha! I'd enjoy a demonstration of the fuel holding capabilities of those
bladders after having sat dry for four years.

So I guess nobody knows a way to trace stolen engines. I suppose if
the owner gets a tip he can always check their engine serial number in
person, but that's about it. Is the FBO or airport liable for
vandalism or theft from aircraft which are paying to base at their
tiedowns?

Fuel Bladders? How are the avionics (or lack thereof)?

The engines will probably end up on airboats.

I guess the only way to do any type of trace would be through the NCIC
system that contains stolen item info. This was done by the police
department that investigated your case. Now I must think that the log
books were not with the engines when borrowed, so they're not worth
much, maybe only to homebuilders or as parts. They may be used as
factory cores, so it may help to contact the manufacturer with those
serial numbers.

>Fuel Bladders? How are the avionics (or lack thereof)?
But the seller doesn't claim that the avionics are "in great shape."
I've flown without avionics for years. Flying with cracked fuel bladders
would be much different.
I doubt, however, that anyone is likely to be dumb enough (like me) to try
strapping two new engines on this plane. It's parts.

There are eight days to go. I suspect it's worth more.

From the looks of the panel, the thieves got a lot more than just the
engines.

Only because it's on Ebay. Have you ever noticed many of the things that
sell on Ebay can be purchased new for less money?

Yes I have, and all I have to say about it is "Caveat Emptor"

They can be stolen for even less. Does it matter?
I use "worth" to mean "what someone's willing to pay." E-bay is a fairly
good tool for determining that.
Your valuation of the object has minimal impact on the rest of us.

And just as many items sell for less than a reasonable price and many go
unsold. Nobody seems to mention that side of the coin very often.
