View Full Version : Info on Buying a Cherokee 180
Brad
July 15th 04, 03:57 PM
I'm selling my Grumman AA1A to purchase a 1963 Cherokee 180. Aside
from the usual prepurchase stuff, I'm wondering if there are any
special things to watch out for on early model Cherokees.
Thanks!

Having new torque links, and Ram Horn yokes saves you from 2
re-curring ADs. The yoke AD isn't bad, but the new torque links are
nice to have. It'd also be good if the fuel line AD was taken care
of. It requires removing the tanks and replacing the fuel lines.
Always look for corrosion on the older models just to be safe. Can't
think of anything else off the top of my head.
HTH.

Oil impeller pump AD.
Wing spar attach SB. (dissimilar metal corrosion).

It's kind of expensive to replace cracked yokes.

fuel line AD? Last I knew it was an SB, not an AD.

Mine was done when I bought it. I thought it was an AD. I could be
wrong, but it'd still be nice to have done.

Is your AA1A still for sale?

Just a note in passing...after checking a guy out in a 63 180 and having
flown a 65 180
it seemed like the 63 180 engine noise was greater.....could be me though.

I believe the exhaust stacks are different for the early 180s vs the
late 180s. My reference for this... Powerflowsystems.com makes
aftermarket exhausts and they reference their exhaust as working for
140s/160s and pre1964 180s.

Check the glass thickness. Many old Cherokees out there with 1/8 inch.
Many upgraded to 1/4 inch.
Aside from the rear spar attachment AD, check if the main spar corrosion
SB was done.
Good Luck,
Mike

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who posted responses for me...
all very helpful on things to watch out for.
Now also wondering if it's worth joining the Piper Owner Society, or
if there is some other owners' group I should look into.
Thanks!

This may have already been said, but the Cherokee Pilots Association is the
best, most active group of Cherokee pilots. Joining their organization
gets you a fair magazine, and access to a terrific web-board.
They also publish a book called "Cherokee Hints and Tips" that is worth its
weight in gold.
AND they also put on a great national Cherokee fly in. See pix from this
year's event at http://www.manxsr.com/tantara/flyin.htm .

Ohio has a Cherokee Pilot Association which has a couple or three flyins per
year. Other states may have same.

Also, the O-360 crankshaft corrosion AD if it's an A3A (hollow crank). There
are a couple of old AD's around that could be pricey too. Counterbalance tube on the
stabilator, and scissor linkages on the main gair. Grab hold of the stabilator at the
ends and see if there's any play in the bearings. I had to repace those on mine.
