clearview inline air filter

I want to protect my vacuum instruments with a filter between the vacuum
regluator and the (dry) vacuum pump on my 74 Archer. Spruce sells the
Clearview for about 50 bucks, and sells the filter plus mounting hardware
and STC for about 85 bucks. Does anyone have any experience with this or
other inline filters? I'm guessing the the extra 35$ is for the STC and a
couple of clamps.

Yep, got one ready to install now. It's just the filter, two hose
clamps, and a couple of ty-wraps. The $30 or so is for the STC that
comes with it. Installation is simply to cut 4 inches of vacuum hose
out of the line between the pump and the regulator valve and insert
the filter.

I installed a clearview filter last year after troubleshooting a vacuum
system gremlin. My experience, in short, is that installing an inline
filter of any kind between the vacuum pump and the regulator is just
good common sense. Call it cheap insurance.

The clearview filter indeed works as advertised...it can be easily
inspected and replaced on condition. As you surmised, you need to buy
the $85 kit first and get the STC signed off by an IA, and then you can
replace the filters with a logbook entry.
