View Full Version : Traded Up

Well, the Warrior finally got too small for the family (or rather for
all the equipment that seems to accompany two small children) so I've
traded up to a 1980 Saratoga...

http://www.mikeg.net/plane/n8096J

It used to be a turbo, but that was removed when LoPresti put a
factory engine in it 550 hours ago, and added all their fancy speed
mods. Avionics are solid, too. The panel was completely redone in late
1997, and was actually featured in S-TEC's newsletter...

http://www.s-tec.com/newsletters/approach198/saratoga.html

Now I just have to get 15 hours to keep Avemco happy!

Congrats, Mike. I have a 1980 Turbo 'toga, fixed gear. Is yours retract?

Wow! What a beautiful plane!
Did you have much complex time beforehand?
How's the transition been?
Congratulations, and I hope you enjoy.
Keep us posted ;-)

That's a beautiful machine, Mike! I've always had an eye for the big
Cherokees, assuming I ever get rid of the 182.

Just curious, what is that rigamaroll under the Stormscope???

Happy Flying!

Scott, unless you need the extra speed and seats frequently, don't give
up the 182.
Find someone with Saratoga, park it next to your 182.
Load up the 182, then transfer everything to the Saratoga and see how
everything fits and where you are within W&B.

I should have looked at the pix before asking you if it was retract in my
earlier post. Obvious from the pix. Very nice!

Yep. Ask me in a couple of years if it was worth it.

Nope. Just 1.5 hours in an Arrow.

I'll let you know in a two or three months! :)

Switching for the HSI, the NAV indicator and the Stormscope GPS link.
The top button in the center controls which GPS feeds the waypoint
display on WX1000E. The left bank controls the source for the HSI, and
the right bank controls the source for the KI-206. In each bank, the
middle switch is GPS/NAV, the top is GPS1/GPS2 and the bottom is
NAV1/NAV2. There are interlocks so that the same source can't be sent
to both indicators, and overrides so that selecting a LOC freq on the
NAV will automatically select it in place of the GPS. The whole lot
feeds six sets of Ameri-King relays in the forward baggage
compartment. (It's a lot simpler in real life than it sounds in this
description!!!)

If you're like me it will take at least that long for you to stop double
checking that the gear's down even after you leave the airport.

It's a surreal feeling to be driving down the road and think, "Did I put
the gear down on that last landing???"

Who'd you trade with? How about some financial details, if you don't mind?

That gives you a great excuse to spend all your spare time at the airport.

I sold the Warrior for $60K and paid $163K for the Saratoga. On
Trade-a-Plane's evaluator and on AeroPrice, the Warrior came out at
$52K and the Saratoga at about $187K, so I think I got reasonable
deals.

I picked the Saratoga because it had...

(a) a lowish time factory engine, rather than an overhaul by someone
you don't know;

(b) club seating, which my wife wanted so she could slide back to play
with the kids;

(c) backup everything (instruments, vacuum, GPS, GS);

(d) S-TEC 55, so it'll fly without vacuum anyway, plus it had flight
director, altitude preselect and yaw damper, which are also great, but
which again I'd never put in myself.

(e) full LoPresti mods, which are great, but which I'd never pay for
myself, as they're not $30K great;

(f) a three blad prop, which looks cool;

(g) an all-metal panel, which is a silly thing, but I didn't want to
pay $150K+ to stare at a crappy piece of cracked plastic!

I'm hoping once I'm up-to-speed in it that we can get back to doing
weekend trips. My wife and I used to do those about once a month or so
until the kids came; since then, we hadn't been able to, and the
Warrior hasn't really earned its money. Hopefully, the Saratoga will!

Just curious, how many kids, and what ages?
Mine are 6, 4, and 1.5, and the LOVE flying.

Two kids at the moment, 6 months and 21 months. They'd both fit in the
Warrior, but I didn't like the idea of the getting everyone in and out
through the single door, and the strollers etc. just made it too
cramped for anything but day trips. Plus, we're planning on a third,
God willing, so the move to the Saratoga was definitely required.

Adam, the oldest, certainly loves, flying, too. Apart from 'mom' and
'dad', 'plane' was his first word. When he hears an engine, he looks
up at the sky, and shouting 'plane!' as he points it out.

He loves going to the airport and watching the comings and goings. He
even pointed out traffic for me when he was in the back of the Warrior
once -- okay, it was a 737 and I'd already seen it, but it was cool to
hear him shout 'plane!' into his headset and for me to turn around and
see him pointing to three o'clock straight at the airliner off my
right wing!

Oh, good. It's not just me. One of the CFIs that helped me in the
transition taught me a trick. If taxiing didn't require full throttle,
you've remembered to lower the gear.
