Unfortunately that link won't work for many because of the crudely implemented pay-wall (no I am not going to subscribe to your little newspaper to read one article...).
The top search result here will get you to the same article...
http://www.google.com/search?q=spectrum+prairie+dog+fence+parowan
(Personally I would have blown the damn pests up... they'll get the message.)

Not pretty, but it looks effective.

The many attempts to accommodate the protected beasts on the airfield
in the grassy areas have failed, since they ended up digging up both
the access road and runway. (A couple of years ago at Region 9 there,
a prairie dog popped his head up in the middle of the runway ahead of
me as I started my take-off run.) The damage to the runways and other
infrastructure has led to the latest attempts to keep them out. We
shall see!
I'm afraid the Rodenator and other gas or explosive-based means are
not permitted to be used on protected species. That would have been
my choice too!

We needed to hire Carl Spackler! He's an expert in rodent
removal.......

The inground portion is "six feed deep"... how long is a "feed"? If
you feed them, won't they stay?
Since these are dogs, can't the county just put collars on them with
electronic zappers as part of an "Invisible Fence" like I see in the
pet stores?
(Okay, okay... I get they idea that they're big rodents, They look
somewhat like the Canadian "Ground Hog", although slimmer... the
Canuck version probably needs the extra insulation).

Back here in the East, we have ground hogs (Punxatawnee Phil) and keep
them away by dropping moth balls down their holes.
Sometimes that does not work if the ground hog is determined so we
take other measures.

A tablespoon of gas dumped into the hole, stand back and throw a
lighted match in the hole. There follows a 'crump' sound (just like
in the old war coomics), and the little guys don't appear.
It was advice from a farmer and it worked for me.

Is there a "grassy knoll" near the grassy areas?

I always find a .22 caliber lead injector works well....

Seems like the right solution to me. Without the fence, P-dogs will
continue to move into the airport area from colonies on adjacent lands
since the airport has been modified inadvertently to be ideal habitat.
That would result in an unnecessary hit to a protected species and a
long protracted battles against nature (not to mention possibly large
fines). With the fence in place, trapping and killing will be a lot
more effective at solving the problem.
Glider pilots should be the least worried about this. If you can't
deal with a rodent on your rollout, what makes you think you are up to
the task of a landout.

Use the dreaded potically uncorrect Colorado P-Dog vacuum.

Brad can verify this: Breed some black-footed ferrets and introduce
them. I think prairie dogs are the main menu items for the ferrets.
Problem is, though, the ferrets are threatened and endangered. And
getting them to breed must be a problem.

When mice give the prairie dogs the plague, the ferrets die also.
It's cyclical. We have prairie dogs and methods to try to keep them
under control. If our neighbors would do the same, the problem would
be easier. The National Black-Footed Ferret Recovery Center is 6.75
miles NNE of the glider port. I spent a fair amount of time driving
the winch during a year and watching all manner of birds, raptors, and
ground critters and have yet to see a ferret. If they'd give me a
few, I'd re-introduce them at the glider port;^)

I just don't get it!
How can a species as prolific as the P-dog, and hunted in other states
be "Endangered"??
They are also a Rodent and Certified Pest, right? and cause economic
problems to farmers and ranchers?
Is this some kind of sick joke??

This is the Utah prairie Dog, a different (and listed endangered) species than those hunted, poisoned, gassed, blown up, napalmed, drowned, etc. elsewhere.
Still I reserve judgement on this fence, wonder how much repair work it will take as these critters dig out one side of the fence etc. They can do an incredible amount of damage.

Ah ha! We don't have prairie dogs here in WI and I wasn't aware there
was a species that was endangered. Of course, it just has to be that
kind that is invading that airport. :(

We don't have them here in So Cal either. My truck still starts every
morning and I' still get to work. My airplane still starts and my
glider launches. They don't dig up my airport and I don't miss them,
please don't bring them down or introduce them here (or I'll shoot and
trap them).

Here is your solution!!!!

Have not tried it, but go on the web site and look at some of the

The Rodenator is also good for fixing USENET posts that repeat stuff that has been mentioned before in a thread. You just squeeze the trigger and kapow those repeat posts are gone :-0
