The Orlando paper has run one of the WE HAVE TO IMPROVE SECURITY articles about light
planes. There's a button to allow you to vote on whether it's needed. Need I say
more?

I voted, and those opposed to additional security were ahead by a huge
majority!

But I could not help noticing that the news story surrounding this "poll"
was one of the most biased and sensationalistic stories I have ever seen!

With journalism of this quality it's no surprise that 3/4 ths of America
doesn't have a clue...

"The plane belonged to Embry-Riddle University. It's one of 70 planes
stolen in the United States since 1999 -- most of them since terrorists
hijacked airliners and used them as missiles on Sept. 11."

Uhhhh - the reason why most of the thefts since 1999 happened *since*
Sept. 11 2001 is because that time period spans under two years before
Sept 11th, and over 2.5 years since. Do the math, brainiacs.

Currently the vote is 79% nay, 21% yea. The American people do
possess common sense after all.

This "small aircraft security" issue is unjustly being employed by the
yellow journalistic media who are attempting to use hoped-for public
hysteria toward General Aviation as a vehicle for driving public
participation in their product. The axis of evil (marketing) rears
its ugly head yet again.

I see the votes are running heavily No (more security not needed), so
I guess that means some reporter will have to work on another, juicier
story.

BTW, in our Friends of University Airport group, our president--who is
very good at working with people--took a reporter and photog from the
local newspaper up for a jaunt prior to our 2nd Annual Open House. We
got a very good writeup in the paper, and now have a contact for the
main mass media source in town. Folks, we gotta play the game....

They have a comment link on their website, so we should all respond to
it. BTW, it is not the Orlando paper, but a TV station, channel 2, which
aired the hit piece last night. It wasn't as bad as the CBS piece of
garbage, because they gave perfunctory time to Phil Boyer of AOPA,
unlike CBS, but it was STILL a hit piece!

The vote is running 858 to 210, or 4:1 AGAINSTt heir proposal.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University representative Richard Theokas.....

"Had that person's intent been to load it up with some plastic explosives
and go run it into a federal building or something like that, they might
have been able to do that," Theokas said.

What does he think this statement would accomplish? I think Embry-Riddle
should find someone that thinks before they speak.

Apparently, 'tis the season:

AOPA ePilot Volume 6, Issue 20 May 14, 2004
-------------------------------------------------------------

LOCAL TV STATIONS TARGET GA SECURITY TO BOOST RATINGS
In recent weeks, AOPA has contacted TV stations across the country
after being alerted (usually by members) that they were working on
stories about "lax" security at general aviation airports. The
wave of stories is no coincidence. It's the May "sweeps" period,
that time of year when stations will do anything to get the best
possible ratings. "Don't make it easy for them," said AOPA
President Phil Boyer, a former TV senior executive who knows all
the tricks of the trade. "Take sensible steps to secure your
aircraft. Follow all of the Airport Watch guidelines (
http://www.aopa.org/epilot/redir.cfm?adid=4297 ).
Set up a buddy system to check on the aircraft that is tied down
or hangared near yours. In addition to denying the media
opportunities for stories, you'll also deny unauthorized access to
your aircraft." For more, see (
http://www.aopa.org/epilot/redir.cfm?adid=4298 ).

I voted. My guess is since the vote ain't going their way it will be pulled
from the online story shortly.

Also someone should have a little discussion with Beau Guest, who it says
runs an aircraft painting business at Leesburg. Seems as though he's
stabbing
us in the back and playing into the hands of the media scum.

My guess is, that even the negative votes serve as evidence that the
TV station's story generated public interest, and will boost their
ratings. :-(

No doubt having a huge population means that the U.S. also has a large
number of ignoramuses. People who can't find Austria on a map of the world
are common here, not only because they are ignorant, but because Austria is
irrelevant.

America has accepted your poor, wretched and down-trodden for over 225
years, so the results were inevitable. My family was part of that exodus,
some 160 years ago. It wasn't until my generation that we were able to
attend college, so it took a while for enlightenment to reach the huddled
masses.

But it did come.

That same huge population, however, also means that the U.S. has far more
highly educated, highly informed people than Austria has people.

Agreed.

But that's why I'm a (rare) proponent of a liberal arts education. The
broader (some might say "more useless" :-) education of a liberal arts
degree goes a long way toward teaching one to think, study, and learn.

And that, in the end, is all you can really hope to achieve in college.

True enough. My political science professors were all proud, card-carrying
Communists. Capitalism was the absolute bane of all existence, in their
world.

However, that kind of propaganda-laden education ultimately only works on
the weak-minded, and often has precisely the opposite effect on students.

I think the Reagan Revolution was pretty good evidence of that.

Well, the two economics courses I took at Carleton College (where
Prof. Wellstone taught before he got elected to the senate) were based
on mainstream economics of the day, using one of the standard
mainstream texts (Milton Friedman, maybe?).

Certainly not what I encountered at Carleton College in the 1970s.
Liberal arts education meant a broad base of material, and an emphasis
on critical thinking.

Punctuation is very important. There's a big difference between an animal that eats
shoots and leaves and one that eats, shoots, and leaves.

I childproofed my house, but they *still* get in.

Cool, It's up to 1970 votes with 88% saying that security need no
improvement. I also scanned the "Talk to 2" pages and all panned the story.

I had sent them a letter the day after but my comments were not included.

According to AOPA, a smattering of these stories appeared this week because
it's sweeps week.
