View Full Version : What to get your CFI?
Slick

I need to do something to say thanks to my CFI, but I can't think of any
grand ideas. I really feel bad for not having to pay him much for
instruction. I'm going for my exam at 41hrs.

If you think he did a great job, give him a tip. If you can't afford what
you feel he's worth, tell him so.

See if you can find out his or her hobbies and pick up something related. The
guy who gave me my tailwheel checkout was building an Air Camper and into other
types of mechanical ventures. I bought him a socket set, IIRC.

If it is just the CFI, tickets to a concert go down well.
In my own case, many people in the flight school had helped me, so I had
a caterer take everyone lunch with a card of thanks.

Congrats Slick! I bought lunches for mine on many occasions after most
flights. When I got my ticket, I took two of my CFIs out to Outback,
good thing they weren't Vegets.

Well, if you live anywhere near Iowa, I know a certain aviation theme-suites
hotel that happens to sell gift certificates...

Money works for me. Perhaps you could buy him some time in the plane
for himself. Since he is married, you could always give him a ham or
some steaks.
Continue on with your instrument rating, after your privite, and use
this instructor. Let everyone know how great he is and recruit new
students for him. I have had many former students let me know how much
they enjoy flying and this is thanks enough for me. Who am I kidding,
I still like cash. lol

From what I have seen of CFIs, food is a good place to start.

A good friend of mine once said that the two best gifts in the world were
cash and liquor. You never heard of anyone returning a bottle of scotch and
cash always goes well with the way they decorate their living room.

I'm married. What is it about the fact that I'm married that makes "ham or
some steaks" a particularly suitable Christmas gift for me?

I'm not a flight instructor, but have been in the aviation biz since
the early 80's.
It was/is surprising to me how few sincere "thank you's" get handed
out in this business.
A "you really did an excellent job, thank you" and a pat on the back
goes a long way in General Aviation, trust me.

Give him one of my books. That's what I do :)
Seriously, a book is always in order. Among the great aviation reads
are Flight of Passage, by Rinker Buck; and Winged Victory, by Victor
Yeates, the latter being a WWI novel.

How about giving him some credit on his account? Some CFIs can't
afford to fly themselves and it can be fun to get to fly for "fun".
Even putting 1/2 hour on his account may make him happy.

You kidding? My wife is a pilot, lives to fly, rides a motorcycle, thinks
camping next to the plane is heaven, drinks only good German beer, and loves
to, uh...golf.
More like ecstatically married, since 1985. (And we dated for 9 years
