When are the best times for XC near Tucson? I grew up in Safford AZ, and I'd like to fly in that area.

The Tucson Soaring Club Operates all year and is located in Marana, Az.

The Best soaring in Tucson takes place around the May long weekend. Usually we have good soaring from May to October with the exception of the wet days during Monsoon Season. The Monsoons can bring great soaring, but they can also bring some isolated rough weather (Thunderstorms, downdrafts, and rarely hail).

Although conditions in southern Arizona improve from April onwards and degrade after about the end of October, we have had long cross-country flights in every month of the year. Good soaring from November through March is spotty, however. Moisture is the key to the best flights and the pre-monsoon season from mid May to the end of June often provides the best conditions, with a secondary peak in September and October as the monsoon wanes.

Check out Tucson Soaring Club flights posted on OLC - these will give you a good idea.

Thanks guys. Ill look at the club info. Good idea using olc to check out the possibilities in the different months. Looks like I can come either end of April or end of June. Or end of August. I'll check out those months.
