Just joined the forum today! I have a LAK-12 with a cracked canopy. Other than going to the factory has anyone (or know of) someone who can make a replacement canopy? I have research this with no luck. This is a great site! Thanks.

I don't know if Ray is still making canopies. He did an excellent job on my LS3-a back in the winter of 2010-2011. It was necessary to make a mold from my existing canopy first. I really like the UV Grey color. You could try contacting him.

Good luck.

If you use ThermotecUSA be prepared for a very "Trying" experience.

I am not sure if ThermotecUSA is still in business. The last time I talked to him it sounded like he was not interested in making canopies any longer. Thanks for the reply.

Leave the mounting screws out upon replacement, just adhesive. I've seen multiple cracks in a LAK-12 canopy following -25F weather, all propagating from screwed holes.

Just understand that Todd's does free-blown transparencies, and the tangency match around all the edges might not be what people have come to expect for glider canopies. If you want a good match, send your cracked canopy to Aircraft Windshields and have them make a plug from it and a new canopy from the plug. Then you can use your plug to corner the US market on LAK-12 canopy transparencies.

Thanks, Bob K.

I'll give a nod to Todd's Canopies.
In the 2007 timeframe, his charge was incredibly reasonable for a custom blown, all-he-had-was-a-framerail, canopy with a nice tint.

As far as tangencies; the canopy on my SZD-52-2 is ~72 inches long and extremely flat at the joins to the body. It took Todd two tries he said, but he was happy w/ the result, and I am too.

Shipping was extra, and reasonable for the size of the crate.
You cut the blank out of the stock and trim to install what he sends back in the container. Now... that is a terrible job. It takes a lot of careful work to trim and install a canopy.

Bumping this old thread, as it seems both the recommended sources are no longer available. What Options to people know of for replacement canopies?
