WX-950 installation

We just ordered a BFGoodrich WX-950 stormscope for our TB-20

Has anyone had any bad experiences with installation of this stormscope ?

Anything tricky we should pay attention to ?

It comes with a 6ft antenna cable. There is another one 25ft long that comes
as extra.

What is the best way to figure out the best location for the antenna (and
hence decide on the cable to choose) ?

You really NEED to have a skin map done by someone that has the
equipment, The cost was less than $100. I was amazed at the amount
of noise that was at various locations I had considered for antenna
mounting. I used the 25 ft cable and wacked off 5 feet of it when I
installed it. The hard part was cutting the AT-3 hole in the panel.
Mine works very well with no problems in the 80+ hours I have used it.
It has kept me away from the dark side when flying in the fuzzes.

In addition to the skin mapping that John_F mentioned, there are also
post installation "storm simulators" that are used to make sure the unit
is working. Keep in mind that a stormscope, for all practical purposes,
is a fancy noise detector, so any electrical noise in your airplane is a
potential problem. You need to take care to avoid ground loops. If I
remember right (from the installation of my WX900), they want you to run a
discrete ground wire directly to the battery, and keep the unit isolated
from any other ground.

In theory, every authorized installer is supposed to have the mapping
equipment. In practice, some installers are much more "serious" about
doing a good job than others. It *is* critical if you want it to
perform without false alarms - and it should be done with the aircraft
hooked up to a power supply and everything on (strobes, xpndr, even
keying the transmitter a couple of times).

The final check is important (no, not the one that pays for the
installation <G>), but try it in flight visually (compared to a real
TRW). More than one idiot has managed to hook the thing up so that it
shows left-right or fore-aft reversed.

It's a good unit, and I think you will be very happy with it.

Hi all,

I'm new to this list. I just purchased a used WX-950 with the antenna,
but no antenna cable. Does anyone have a source for the cable, preferrably
a used one? The L3 part number for the 25' cable is
803-10950-001.... They want too much. I'll settle for a used one and cut
it to my length (about 20')...

If there's one area that you don't want to skimp on, with any stormscope
installation, it's the cable (along with antenna location). This can
dramatically effect the performance. I'd reconsider the new one, if I
was you.
