http://www.terraserver.com has had this for several years. For a
while it was linked into MapPoint (or MapQuest?) so you could select
either a map or one of several satellite views. The problem is they
need a way to let the user specify a location by lat-long. Frequently
I pass a place of interest while hiking and memorize the position on my
GPS. At home I want to put those coords into the map/satellite program
for a look.

I found out our local fire department needs this capability, also. I
found a campfire that had not been put out very well and called the
local fire department. They wanted to know the fire location and I
said, "N42 18.123 W071 17.456". They asked what I was talking about
and then launched into a discussion about what town I was in. I agreed
to hike out to the trail head and lead them back.

Strange as it seems, the free version is "temporarily" unavailable but the
versions for purchase are available.

I'm awaiting the Linux version. It looks like a nice program, and it
appears to be written with a cross-platform widget set... Too bad I
can't run it on my everyday computer.

The free version is back as of this morning.

Hmmm. What URL are you using? I just checked and got:
==========================================
Google Earth downloads temporarily delayed

Thanks for your interest in Google Earth, but we're sorry we can't offer
you a download right now. As you know, Google Earth is in beta, and we're
still building out our ability to take on new users. We're making good
progress, and expect to be able to accept new downloads shortly, so we
recommend you check back daily at earth.google.com. We hope to be able to
welcome you and other new planet surfers soon.

We appreciate your patience,

The Google Earth Team

Same URL (earth.google.com). But yes, I see it's back to the not-now
message. Maybe it's a bandwidth-limit thing; try late at night or early in
the morning, perhaps.

Sorry, as I lost some of this thread but if you are referring to the
satellite images at Google, go to:

http://maps.google.com/

Then zoom in an area you would like and click the "Satellite" link in the
upper right corner of the map.

That's useful too, but we're talking about something different.

The coverage is actually pretty much limited to major metro areas and some
isolated semi-major metro areas. In other places, the detail is terrible.
You can do much better with USGS sat data in those areas.
