Anybody want to tell me why I shouldn't do it?
Actually I'd welcome hearing about what anyone at Oshkosh has to say
about what they see and hear.
I can't wait, Christmas in August - Cheap ******* on 'roids (and with a
bill)

Not I. My Visa card is quivering in fear even as we speak.

Wilco, if I can get near the Garmin booth..

I think you've come to the wrong place to be talked out of that
particular purchase. I've been salivating over it for a while.
If it's as good as it looks I'll be getting on as my present to myself
when I pass the instrument check ride.

I can't wait to hear your review of it.
I wonder if the XM weather stuff can be used while in car mode? It
would be cool to know if you are driving toward storms or not.

I'm number 91 on JA Air's order list. Sure wish I could have it for the Oshkosh
trip. They say I should get it in the first two weeks of August.
My wife found out about it, so I can expect there will be some additional
expenses. ;-)

Good for planes, trains, cars, boats, 2 wheelers, 3 wheelers...

Hey, Maule, I just received an email from Aviation Consumer announcing a
seven page advance review of the 396 they were able to compile after flying
with the unit for three days.
If you have an online subscription to their website, you can read the

Here are the article title and next sentence as a teaser:

Garmin¢s 396: Best Datalink Yet
It pains us to gush too much, but the 396¢s weatherlink performance
deserves kudos. XM audio and terrain warnings are nice-to-have pluses.

Maule Driver,
What do you plan to get out of the 396 besides XM weather and GPS
moving map?
I use the Lowrance Airmap 1000 for GPS and have been checking out
various EFB and XMweather options. While the 396 provides a convenience
XMweather/moving map, I find its small display size a drawback.
After lugging several stacks of NOS charts in our NY-MI-IL trip, I
think the digital charts maybe a better option for longer cross
country trips so I am looking for a display system for both weather and
digital charts.
I have followed threads on XMweather options using PDA, tablet PC or
laptops with various pros and cons. Right now, I am leaning towards
getting a small Tablet PC with blue tooth for XM weather and Jeppesen
FliteDeck electronic charts with moving map. I had thought of getting
the IBM X41 tablet 12" tablet PC but the latest Motion Computing tablet
LS800 at 8.4" and view-anywhere display seems to be a better option.
I am quite aware of increased possibility of hard drive failures at
high altitude. However, with most of our flying done at <10,000' and
the lack of data on laptop failures due to prolonged usage during
commerical flight (with cabin pressure at equivalent of 8000'), I am
not too concerned.

IEEEEEE! I'll have to sign up again. I used to subscribe to the
newsletter which included the online. Do they have an online only sub now?

I showed this review to my non-pilot wife and her reply was:
> WOW!!! Yes, you must buy this!!! Go get it now. Seriously.
Once again Aviation Consumer comes through for the pilot community :)
Seriously, I'm very impressed with them for getting this review done and
up ASAP. When I first heard about this box I wondered how long it would
take AC to get a useful review up, and I hoped it would be soon. I am
once again impressed with their service to subscribers. The money I
spend on that magazine is well-spent many times over.

That's it. The XM weather in particular. Specifically the radar
images. Worth the price of admission in the SE US.

I'm counting on the display being an order of magnitude better than the
Palm VII I used with Cheap *******s. CB completely sold me on the value
of downlinked Nexrad. On a poor b/w display, without a gps driven map,
25 minute old images, no service level agreement, and an unreliable RF
uplink - it was magic. You CB guys deserve an award.

Yep, I'd like that too. Mainly for backup. I think I'm still hooked on
paper. A paper chart and a dull pencil are the two most reliable things
in my cockpit - got to keep it simple in single pilot IFR. I've
downloaded backup plates onto my Thinkpad for possible use. When I
needed them, opening up the Thinkpad was not a good exercise. But I'd
love to have the option.

That's about where I was. The Lenovo X41 was attractive, blue tooth,
XM, etc. Though after considering footprints and the fact that my
laptop desk is almost always occupied, a PDA based approach was winning
out. As much as I like cobbling things together, it just seemed less
than ideal for the IFR mission. I want simple, dedicated devices
(pretty amazing to say that considering the function involved) and no
Windex or Windox or whatever you call that thing.

I too saw those discussions here. My original iPod just began acting up
in the plane. Never on the ground but now always in the air. Very
screwy (but another justification for XM). After all the other aircraft
investments, it seems to make some sense to stick to purpose-designed
devices.

How would I de-spam your email, in the event I wanted to ask you a question
off-line?
Better still, send me an email at: (remove the capital
letter).

$30/mo for "Aviator LT", or $50/mo for "Aviator".

Man, if that display were only about twice as long and twice as
high... Still, I'm probably going to end up getting one even if I
would rather have a tablet PC display.

Garmin gave a 30-minute intro. seminar each day on the 396. The unit is
a complete knockout, IMO, and an enormous improvement over the 296,
which was already damned good. The XM weather stuff is fabulous, of
course, but other improvents have been made to the pages, operating
logic and display as well.
All the vendors quickly sold out of 396s, with no discounting. I
ordered one on line from Gulf Coast Avionics. They're giving me $800
for my 296 and promise to ship in early September.
