View Full Version : Simple Green Aircraft Cleaner

They were giving away free samples at their booth at OSH and I brought
some home, a 32-oz. spray bottle. This afternoon I tried it on my
airplane.
Wow.
This stuff is amazing. I hadn't touched the belly of '87D in nearly a
year, and it was absolutely filthy with 140+ hours of oil and exhaust
residue. In about 20 minutes of work with the Simple Green, a soft
brush and a garden hose, I had the whole belly - and the wheels - and
the wheel wells - spotless. And I'm not even sure the brush was really
necessary for anything but the thickest crud in the wells.
There was a part of the belly just behind the exhaust pipe that I had
believed was permanently stained because nothing else I'd tried had
touched the stuff. I sprayed it with the SG, waited 2 minutes, and it
wiped right off.
I still had about a third of the bottle left when I was done, which
should be enough for at least one more cleanup if I only wait a couple
of months instead of a year. Since this stuff takes all the dread out
of the job, I expect I'll be doing it more often.
This is the best thing I ever brought home from OSH.

I've been using the standard Simple Green, you can purchase from just
about any store, for about 3 years now... I wasn't aware that they
made and "Aircraft" specific brand...
I agree! It really works well. I try and clean the belly of the 172,
at least once a year with Simple Green and it is really easy to do!
Someone recommended GOJO to me at one point, and said anybody who is
anybody with a plane uses GOJO to clean the belly. So I bought a big
pump bottle of GOJO and used it once (I was noticing that where ever I
used it, the lather that was on the rag seemed to take on the same
color of the paint in the area I was working on). I'm sure it works
well for some of those really tough spots, but I don't want to speed up
the date for a new paint job! I haven't found an instance yet, where I
couldn't spray on a little Simple Green and get out a stubborn spot
without having to put any elbow grease into it.
Simple Green works for me...

According to the Simple Green people, that product should not be used on
aircraft, as it may cause corrosion.

hmmmm... I'll have to check into their AC brand then...
I think as often as I use it (and I typically only use it on the
belly), I'm probably okay, but I certainly don't want to foster a
corrosion problem!
Thanks for the heads-up!
Best Regards,
Todd

According to the Simple Green people, ref

aircraft version, which is what is under discussion here.

K, something slipped in my head between the topic title and someone
who was using the original Simple Green. <sigh>. Teach me to post
after a 10hr day.
Nevermind.....

Run a pH test on plain Simple Green and you will find that it is alkaline as
hell. The aircraft version is fairly pH neutral AND has been approved by
Boeing for use on aluminum.

No need to... I'll take your word for it.
How about the GOJO? Anybody ever use that or have recommendations one
way or the other? Not that I plan on using it anymore, just curious...
