This morning, while working out together, my 15 year old son asked (out of
the clear blue sky) if he can take a friend flying next week.

Absentmindedly, I reply "Sure -- what's the guys name?" -- to which my son
replied "Anna..."

Yikes! His first date with a girl, and he wants to take her flying -- how's
THAT for starting 'em out young? :-)

Any suggestions? Did any of you guys ever fly one of your kids out on a
date?

At 15, you'd better start him on flight instruction.

I was taking my girl friends on flying dates at 17 without my Dad. <G>

If I found myself in that situation (my kids are 27 and 24) I'd be
certain to call the girls parents just to make sure that they are O.K.
with the idea of their daughter going up in "one of those little planes."
I would not tell that there is no rear view mirror to watch for any
"extra-aviation" activity in the back seat. <wink> Just my $0.02 worth.

Hmmm. I had not considered that. Probably a good idea, but that will
REALLY convince my son how "uncool" we are...

Well - as I read that Jay - he didn't invite you along!
And, it seems to me, that choosing between the plane actually lifting
off with Dad at the controls, or, sitting in the hangar with dad nowhere
in sight, he is looking for option #2.

Just a thought :)

Fortunately, "being cool" is not in any way a condition of parenthood. And
that goes double for "being cool in the eyes of one's children".

Why not suggest that Joe talk to the girls parents about it and if they
have any questions, they can call and speak with you or Mary?

I wouldn't trust any 15 year old to do that. I would talk to the girl's parents
myself.

Back in the day, kids used to like going to the drive-in.

Maybe you could take them to a fly-in instead?

I was going to contact you back-channel (I've always wanted to type that)
....but I figured what the heck, I'll send it out here instead. Here goes.

The difference between 11 and 16 is like the difference between 20 and 45.
Joey isn't 11 anymore, he's almost 16, and he wants to be 17. He'll be
helped getting there if you treat him like he's 17 - kind of grease the
skids for him, as it were - which won't be easy for you to do, especially if
he *is* acting 11 some afternoon around the house. <g>

Joey next year at OSH?
In his own tent down in Vintage - do they allow 16 year old volunteers?

Joey on a date with a young lady?
Being treated like a [nervous] young man by his pilot father.

This is the long way around for reminding you that it's his date, not Jay's.
Behave yourself Dad :-)

Let's see, both kids in the back seat or his friend up in the right seat
working the controls? It'll be interesting to see how JOEY plays it.

You are PIC. Will you be giving the pre-flight briefing or will you turn
some of that over to ...just a minute!!

"Joey! Stop putting boogers in your sister's hair."

Now, where was I? Oh, I know - However you play it, good luck.

minimum...

Actually, it was Joe's idea to let her fly the plane. I don't know if he's
trying to thrill her, or trying to test her -- but it'll be interesting.

I just hope the weather isn't like today. 90 degrees, 5 miles vis, gusty
winds -- yuck. A friend and I flew up to Lone Rock for lunch, and it was
butt ugly. Without a GPS, it would have been done with a heading and a
stop-watch, cuz there were certainly no ground landmarks visible. We had to
climb to 9500 feet to get above the very thick haze.

Date update: The girl told Joe today that her "parents didn't think she
should go flying until she knows him better" -- at which point she then
invited HIM out to see a movie tomorrow night!

Ten bucks says that's a line of BS from the parents, who didn't want her
flying in "one of those little planes"...

But, no matter. My kid is happy, for now. Little does he know he's taking

When you have a boy, you worry about the penis. When you have a girl, you
worry about every penis.

BTW young bucks out there, French kissing is NOT starting from the neck and

That's hilarious!

And almost as bad as me (at probably about Joe's age, 15?) kissing a girl
so passionately that our teeth smashed together, really, REALLY hard. I
mean, like, painfully, "Gosh, did I hurt you? Yes? Oh, crap!" hard.

I'm sure she's still telling that story to her children, wherever they
are...

Yeah, me too. One Aeronca Champ, one 17 year old and a girl named Tammy.
Problem was, her dad didn't find out until it was over and my dad grounded
me from the Champ for a month.

That was 1962 and there was a lot more interest in flying by young people
then. The airport was full of guys, and gals, and I miss that today.

A cop is out patrolling the local lover's lane. He sees the usual cars with
the usual steamed up windows, but there is one car with the lights on
inside.

He walks up to the car and sees a kid in the driver's seat reading, and a
girl in the passenger side reading.

He knocks on the window and the kid rolls the window down:

"Evenin', officer"
"Evenin, son, watcha doing?"
"I'm reading a book officer"
"What's the young lady doing?"
"I believe she's reading a book too, officer"
"How old are you, son?"
"Eighteen, officer"
"How old is the young lady?"
"Well, officer, in exactly thirteen minutes, she's going to be eighteen
too."
